Lounge passes

Recently, I gave a friend some empress lounge passes, I was under the impression that these could be used at either Canadian's empress lounge or American's Admiralty lounge if the former were not available. My friend was told they could not enter the admiralty lounge in Miami. (they were travelling on an AA flight)
Can anyone clarify this?

There are some restrictions regarding lounge priviledges. The program does state lounge membership includes SELECT British Airways' Executive Clubs and SELECT American Airlines' Admirals clubs throughout the US. Also consider that he was ticketed on on AA flight and did not have a valid membership card or CP boarding pass. For more information regarding lounge programs contact IAPA (International Airline Passenger Association) at 1-800-821-4272.

In one of the Canadian Plus newsletters, I've read that the complimentary Empress Lounge Passes that come with your Presidents Clum package are no longer valid.
