Recent Canadian Passport applications - questions for you

About to apply for a new passport... questions:

1. How many days did it take for you to receive the passport after applying?

2. Did you use the regular, normal or express option?

3. Did you pick it up in person or did you have it sent to you by mail?

4. Did anyone call your references or guarantors?

Trying to decide if it's worth the extra $$$ to pick it up in person or use an express option.

Just renewed my passport last week.

10 year.

Asked for express, ready in 4 business days (dropped off in person on Tuesday, picked up Monday morning) - it's only $50.00 more then the regular fee.

It was a renewal so no guarantors are needed.

My references were not contacted.

10 business days exactly

2. Did you use the regular, normal or express option?

Regular

Dropped off and picked up in person

4. Did anyone call your references or guarantors?

No

My passport was issued the day after I dropped the paperwork off (the issue day on the passport). I suspect if I had had it posted to me, it would have arrived within a couple more days (i.e. faster than the pick up in person method). I had specified in person pick up (as I was travelling soon and didn't want it going astray), so went the day they told me it would be ready.

That's interesting that you think mailing would be faster. Anyone had this experience before?

Just did the simplified renewal yesterday, no rush, all basics options, and mailing to me. I was told that i should receive it by the 17th of this month.

My recent experience has been for a renewal - dropped off without ordering any express service, and received the passport by courier 7 days later.

Just an update, I received my new passport 2 days ago (I missed the delivery and picked it up yesterday), it came in a 2 day Canada Post envelope. Date of issue was on the 7th. So 9 days since drop off I got it.

Also in Toronto at the Victoria St. location. It took over an hour to be seen at the counter. Then was it was very quick. The passport arrived by Registered Mail after less than two weeks. They also told me when the passport would arrive when I was dropping the documents off. I think it was a day or two early.

IMO the express option is not worth it if you don't need the passport during a period of 30 days.

Dropped mine off in Vancouver on a Thursday (renewal), regular service and received it by mail the following Wednesday. No guarantors contacted in my case although I will add that I was a guarantor for 2 friends and I was contacted. This was about a year ago.

I renewed my kids passports last month, dropped off in St. Catharines.Came in mail less then a week later.

One time I realized the day before a flight to San Francisco I had lost my passport. I went to Hamilton, paid a lot of money, and got a replacement same day.
