Weekend in San Diego

I'm am a solo traveler visiting San Diego for a weekend in September. Staying at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. Planning to visit Sea world on day 1 and do these two walking tours on day 2 along with visits to the USS Midway and the Maritime Museum.

1. I got the hotel on Priceline. Has anyone stayed at this property? How would I travel to Seaworld and the Gaslamp district from here without renting a car?

2. Are the two walking tours worth it or does anyone have better ideas on how to spend the day in San Diego. (Please don't recommend Balboa park). Is the Maritime Museum worth visiting or are there better things to do downtown?

3. I was looking up Segway tours of the area. Are they worth the $150 or so for a 2-3 hour tour?

4. Are the behind the scenes interaction programs at Seaworld worth the almost $200 they are charging?

A few years ago I stayed at the Hilton Harbor Island without renting a car. Its in the same area as the Sheraton. The easiest way to get to Seaworld is probably by cab. Otherwise, you can take the #30 bus to the Old Town Station and transfer to the #9 which goes by Seaworld. However, the bus would be a hassle unless you are already close to the bus stop.

Check with your hotel about a shuttle to the Gaslamp area. My hotel had one that left on the top of the hour.

I stayed there a couple months back. Decent hotel with nice views, but convenient to nothing but SAN. I got it on Priceline too and it's a huge stretch to call it 'Downtown - Gaslamp'. Normally my bids would get the Westgate and it's positioned perfectly. Maybe $8 cab to downtown from the Sheraton. They do run a shuttle to the closest trolly terminal. Not sure about to the Gaslamp. I felt forced to rent a car + parking, which totally offset the great price. wj

Which Seaworld tour?

Specifically, which "behind the scenes" tour are you referring to at $200?

My daughter works at SeaWorld and I'd be happy to ask her details if I know which extra tour or interaction you are considering?

I do know that the Dolphin Interaction Program (DIP) and Beluga Interaction Programs (BIP) are excellent ...

Getting to Seaworld without a car is a pain, but can be done via public transportation or taxi.

If you're an aviation buff, you can easily spend several hours at the USS Midway. We are members and pop in for a few hours each visit and I still haven't seen it all!

Those are the the 2 programs I was referring to.

I guess I will take a cab. Any recommendations for a cab company?

To quote my daughter, "totally do a BIP, it's way better" :)

I unfortunately have no experience with taxi's in the San Diego area as when we go, I either rent a car, use the trolley or bum my daughter's car. I would think the Sheraton can recommend a reputable cab company.

I have not been to the Maritime Museum so again, I cannot advise on that one (it's on my to-do list). There's also the San Diego Air & Space Museum if you want another aviation oriented opportunity.

Segway tours are a great way to see a city and cover lots in ground in a short period of time. We did one in Anchorage this summer and it was a kick! I'd certainly give it a whirl if you're so inclined.

Enjoy your visit ...
