Need a discount hotel in hong kong, kowloon

I understand prices in HK are considerably higher than most other places. Would like something clean and safe with private bath if possible (but not required) in a location that is accessible for sightseeing and walking around.

If you don't have time to do this kind of research, your best bet is to work with a travel agent who can steer you in the right direction.

Priceline Express Deals? Priceline name-your-own-price bidding option? Hotwire Hot Rates?

Welcome to FT!

The famous Chung King Mansion

As well as others on Nathan Road and surroundings

Many, many rooms available for not much money, but tiny tiny tiny.

Booking.com, Agoda.com and many others.

Beat me to it. The place is legendary for long lines to use the elevators at times and stairwells being used as dumping grounds and attracting rats.

I once stayed next door at Mirador Mansion with slightly-less-bad versions of that. Name of the place was something like Hotel USA and rooms were $35 and about the size of a Paris Hilton closet, though it's amazing what they could cram in there. That place was OK. Definitely read reviews for places before considering booking, though...you could get a real dump if not careful.

On trips earlier than that I stayed at the YMCA (also nearby), but they kept getting nicer and more upscale (last time I stayed there some years ago it was $70)

Agree that Mirador is nicer, but somehow didn't find availability the last time there (going again in November ).

But I seriously doubt the rooms are bigger than Miss Hilton's closet @:-)

The Y was recommended by a local, but yes, I found it more expensive and passed.

Don't you mean the infamous Chung King Mansions? I'd avoid the place.

I debated using that, but really it's both.

The first time I stayed there was not by choice

UA flight was late (what else is new ), pre merger at that, and when I arrived at Mirador Mansion the gentleman told me all rooms there were gone and escorted me to my room a couple of blocks south.

In the morning discovered I spent the night in infamous Chung King Mansions

Second time was by choice as it seems I could not find a room in Mirador Mansion for the night I wanted (booking very close in as I cancelled my original Holiday Inn points reservation as it was too far from the airport).

Micro Hotel is in the heart of Kowloon and provides simple accommodations with air conditioning and private bathrooms. It has laundry services, as well as free Wi-Fi.

Micro Hotel Nathan Road is only an 8-minute walk from Yau Ma Tei MTR subway station. The hotel is a one-hour drive from Hong Kong International Airport and a 15-minute drive from Central (central business district of) Hong Kong.
