IME safety is no more of a problem in the FQ than in any other tourist area. There's usually a visible police presence cruising around, and major streets like Bourbon are packed with people at all hours. Biggest annoyance is minor scammers -- people come up to you and try to give you Mardi Gras beads or a rose or offer to take your picture or something else and then want money. Just keep walking, and always be very careful around distracting things in the street such as a street performer or even worse, a fight.
Oh, and if anyone approaches you and offers to bet you $5 they can tell you "where you got your shoes," just reply "I GOT my shoes on my feet" and keep walking.

100% correct, and in line with all my travel experience in large cities. Not any more than other places. Some stories of crime and scary tales to talk me out of visiting neighborhoods via car service or bike tour were just taken with grain of salt.
when running walking I had a money belt loosely under my shirt.
and my bag was small, and secured with carabiner on the two zippers
(just a bit harder and more time to open, IMO)

I've been to NOLA twice since I posted my original question and I really love it.
I've stayed in Central City and Fauborg Marigny, and I liked both neighborhoods a lot. I've not had any problems with crime. I walked a lot in areas that many might warn against. But the problem is -- I would still say that it's probably a bit dangerous, based on what I read regularly at NOLA.com. There is a lot of violent crime in New Orleans, including some very close to the areas I stayed. So just use your discretion and decide what you are comfortable with.

Try this place for really great soul food at reasonable prices. Right at the east edge of the French Quarter.

Would it be safe to assume that if one wants to stay in french quarter, one would need to spend a bit of money on lodging? Do those attending conferences stay at FQ as well, or do they mainly stay downtown?
Is eating and drinking in FQ more reasonably priced compared to lodging?

Haven't found it that expensive, especially food. Even drinks are rather cheap.
Last time I went to NOLA stayed at Holiday Inn a couple of blocks west of Canal Street and it was in line with prices in other large cities.
