Easyjet Cancels Flight

My niece, nephew and a friend are travelling in Europe right now. They had a flight booked with Easyjet tomorrow (Jan 21st) taking them from Venice (Marco Polo) to Paris (Orly). Coincidentally (there was no email sent), my nephew found out that this flight was cancelled, so they're hastily trying to make other arrangements. They've found a Ryanair flight from Venice (Treviso) to Paris (Beauvais) but they're hesitant due to the cost (Beauvais is 80 km to their hotel in Paris). They would stay an extra day in Venice but they've prepaid the hotel in Paris.

Is Easyjet responsible for any of their additional costs caused by their cancellation? I don't believe this was weather related as other airlines seem to be running on schedule.

If the flight was cancelled for a reason that was NOT outside the airline's control then they entitled to fixed-rate compensation. You'll have to read the EU directive (EU261/2004) to find out exactly how much - it's something like 200 or 300 Euro per person.

This should cover the prepaid hotel!

Thanks. Not sure how to find out why the flight was cancelled but the kids will go to the airport today to make enquiries and try to make other arrangements.

Paris (ORY / CDG) – Current Weather Disruption
21 janvier 2013 - Updated 12:00
DGAC (French Aviation Regulator) issued an instruction on Sunday 19th requiring all airlines to proactively cancel 40% of the easyJet flying program for Monday 20th (also affecting all other airlines) based upon forecasted snow and adverse weather conditions. easyJet proceeded to cancel 54 flights and have communicated to all affected passengers. In the meantime the weather forecast has changed and DGAC have now reversed their earlier decision made yesterday and increased the operating capacities of Paris Orly and CDG back to normal levels. easyjet is seeking in re instate a small number of the cancelled flights – however the majority will not be possible to due to operational reasons and the ability to re-contact all passengers at short notice. Flights reinstated so far: (This will be updated if additional flights are reinstated)

Flights that were cancelled and are now operating:
EZY4067 Paris Orly - Nice | Departing 1700 & Arriving 1825
EZY4068 Nice - Paris Orly | Departing 1855 & Arriving 2025
EZY7045 Liverpool - Paris CDG | Departing 1745 & Arriving 2015
EZY7046 Paris CDG - Liverpool | Departing 2045 & Arriving 2115

Any passengers wishing to use these re-instated services should call Customer Services on +0044 (0)843 104 5454. You can also manage your booking via the airport sales desk.

We are expecting some disruption in Paris today due to the weather and we recommend that you check the status of your flight and allow additional time to travel to and from the airport. Although this situation is outside of our control, we would like to apologise for the inconvenience and we will continue to find ways to reduce your disruption.

Merci beaucoup - thanks!

They're back from the airport and stuck in Venice until Wednesday and of course Easyjet isn't to blame for the weather.

As the cancellation was due to weather, EU261 compensation doesn't apply. So unless easyJet will rebook them, they would just receive a refund.

The compensation rules of EU261/2004 don't apply if the delay is due to weather. But airlines have to feed passengers, and put them up in a hotel if required, regardless of the reason for the delay.

Thanks Aviatrix....

It appears they have been put up (not sure about fed though). They're trying to book on Ryanair tomorrow (they were told the Easyjet flights to Paris are sold out). If they do book on Ryanair, Easyjet still cover tonight's hotel & meals?

Also, they're already reupped with Easyjet for Wednesday. How much of a refund will they get if they cancel or noshow (if they decide to fly Ryanair tomorrow)? They paid approx 80 Euro each.
