One month solo vacation in September, where to go

I would get one month off in September, 2012. I need help to decide where to go on a solo adventure. I have enough miles to visit any corner of earth I want. But, I am totally confused.

I love hiking, experiencing new culture and roaming around an interesting city (e.g. Paris). However I hate crowds.

I know it is tough to suggest something when the options can be varied. Where would you go if you had one month off in September?

I was considering a few options.

1. G Adventures Ecuador tour http://www.gadventures.com/trips/inl...azon/EIA/2012/ Sept 1-16. Sept 16-30 in Spain/Bolivia/Argentina/Turkey. I know spain sounds strange.. However, the prices and time for flights from Quito to Madrid and Quito to La Paz (Bolivia) is roughly the same. I wanted to go to Peru but Inca Trail permits are sold out and I want to do that when I get my Peru visa.

2. one month in Brazil/Argentina & Chile/Bolivia & Chile/ Spain

3. Half a month in Spain, other half in Turkey/Switzerland

4. Anything else that experienced travelers in this forum would suggest :)

PS: I visited Paris and Zurich recently , so want to leave that out.

Thanks in advance

I'm assuming you'd like it to be a budget trip, and I don't know where you are at but Asia would be a very cheap spot to explore. Exotic enough.

Something for everyone.

A month exploring Kalefornia should provide lifelong memories of the land of fruits and nuts.

Turkey would be a good choice in September. Morocco too.

May I suggest the following link, that has a lot of great suggestions geared for independent travellers like you: http://www.travelindependent.info/topplaces.htm

California in the USA would be a great choice. You could easily spend a month:

I would recommend flying into San Francisco.

From there:
The city itself
The Napa Valley
The beautiful Lake Tahoe Area (Beautiful in Fall and lower cost)
Yosemite National Park (Ansel Adams photographic stomping grounds)
Big Sur (Some of the most breathtaking skyscapes ever)
The redwoods

Moving south to
Monterrey and the artist colonies
Santa Monica
LA

If you are adventurous you can slip across the Mexican border and end up in Baja California

There are plenty of Hostels if that is your preference to keep the cost down.

My one-month trip in November will be to South Island New Zealand for hiking and adventure sports, then to a remote island in Fiji to camp on the beach at an Eco resort. I will be going with my husband, but this type of trip is very well suited for solo travel. Kiwis and Fijians are super friendly, fun and open people.

There are plenty of group tours/buses/adventure trips you can do in a group in NZ and meet tons of people. Lots of multi-day hikes. Accommodations are in huts, hostels or dorm-style. Not crowded per-se because of the large open spaces, plus, September is early spring so still plenty of rain and very few tourists (they come in Dec/Jan/Feb).

Same for Fiji - you can island hop the mamacunas and stay in hostel accommodations on the beaches or tiny specks of sand and meet lots of fun people. The place I am going is a lot off the beaten path, also to avoid crowds - Maqai beach resort in Qamea, Fiji. Same idea, less people. September will be good weather - not too hot.

good luck!

We were in nicaragua last year and there were hundreds of 20 and 30 something's backpacking through central america. If i loose my job, and get a package, im taking my 5'6 lost fish and hitting the trail.

Via Coeur d'Alene, Spokane or Camloops head to the Kootenay region of British Colombia. Go north up the Alcan and visit the Laird hot springs....then south on the Cassier highway to complete your loop. Oh Mercy!

(a larger loop can be had by heading further north to Dawson City)

I would choose Half a month in Spain, other half in Turkey/Switzerland. But if you are heading down here send a pm ;)

You could do a lot worse than Octoberfest (begins 9/22/2012).
