Chicago > Vienna/Munich on the Cheap

I haven't had much luck hunting down a good price for Detroit/Chicago/Toronto to Vienna or Munich for September. The average price seems to hover around $900-1,100 or so. Is there such a thing as budget friendly Europe-bound travel out of the Chicago or Detroit corridor?

Are there any suggestions on how to make this a cheaper flight? Is there a reliably cheap jump from Detroit or Chicago to Frankfurt or another city?

I'm fairly new to looking for cheap European fares. I've heard that Air Transat from Toronto tends to be budget friendly (minus all those taxes). Thoughts?

I found an Alitalia (ORD-MUC-YYZ) for $759 and a Finnair ORD-MUC for $807. Do you need to go lower?

If it can be under $700, I'm definitely not complaining. Wow, thanks!
