Cheap flight are the Nanny flight HKG MNL on 5J but your baggage allowance is severely limited; which means no Balikbayan.
You are not saving much if at all going US HKG or TPE and then another flight to MNL.

And yes, flights to HKG with LCC to PI has been recommended on other boards as well.

Alas, for the average traveler, I stand by my statement: what do you need besides carryon?

Nobody dares to go home to PH without Balikbayan.
Every time I head to MNL or CEB for business I am tempted to auction off my extra luggage allowance at the airport.

BTW in PH the country name is spelled with a P but the people are spelled with a F; so say my Filipino business contacts.

Upstart Hainan Airline is driving down the price of TPAC flights via PEK. There is a limited visa free transfer at PEK to other airlines.
The network, transfers and timing might not work for everyone.

This would be the cheapest LAX-MNL PR consolidator I personally have found.
http://www.citytoursandtravel.net/ (call them on the phone they don't yet reliability handle internet)
These days they are a little cheaper than any place else. Not "allot" cheaper.
If anyone knows better for PR I would love to hear it.

Most recently OZ had some awesome deals LAX-MNL
