British Airways is to launch new thrice-weekly direct services from Gatwick to both Male in the Maldives and Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt from October 25, 2009.
This will be the first time British Airways has flown to the Maldives, but will be a return for the airline’s colours to the Red Sea resort.
The routes will be operated by Boeing 777 aircraft with a three-class configuration: World Traveller, World Traveller Plus and Club World.
Richard Tams, British Airways’ head of UK & Ireland sales, said: “These new routes will be great assets to the BA network and a real winner with customers. They are both perfect holiday destinations, known for their great beaches and fantastic diving. We’re particularly pleased to be serving a completely new destination, the Maldives and returning to Sharm El Sheikh. We expect both routes to perform well.”
A wide range of good value hotels from independent properties to luxury five-star resorts in both the Maldives and Sharm El Sheikh will be available to book on ba.com giving further choice and flexibility to all holidaymakers.
Tickets will be on sale from Friday May 29, 2009 through www.ba.com and direct through BA reservations on 0844 493 0787.
Other changes to the network include the cessation of the London Gatwick to New York flight from October 25.
British Airways operates up to ten daily flights to New York and will launch the first ever London City - New York service later this year

YES!! There is someone up there looking after divers who don't want to slum it!! And I hadn't yet parted with my dosh in Emirate's favour.... now all we need if a nice F cabin and we're set
I think this is absolutely the right thing to do, I was a bit disappointed when LGW-JFK was announced especially when BA have 11 flights a day to NYC from LHR anyway. From what I've heard, the loads weren't up to much and I think that Virgin have said that it's the leisure routes that are holding up at the minute.
I think it's great that LGW are getting another two new routes and SSH on a longhaul aircraft will be a winner, one of the things that worked against BA/GB in the past is that it was flown on a narrowbody.

+1
It excites me too. Just hope they have the product in the respective destiations to sell also. I.e Hotels.
There is an interesting glitch on the BA website though. Just checking prices etc (of course just full fares in there now), and I'd priced up two J returns to MLE (~£7.5k!!!) when I spotted the "Upgrade for just £4500" button. Strange, didn't think there was any F, press button and it reprices the trip in WT!!! Hmmm, not my idea of "upgrade"
