Why does BA still send out "choose your seat" emails when you aren't allowed to?

Whenever I buy tickets for family members, ba.com always brings me to the "choose your seat" screen. But when I go to choose the seats, it says it isn't possible. Now weeks after I made the booking, I get another email telling me to choose the seats. Of course it won't allow it. I'm Gold, but my family isn't. Why can't the website and MMB programmers get this?

Hi,

Not sure what you mean that when you buy a ticket, ba.com takes you to the choose your seat screen. Is this after you just made payment? Or when you go into MMB?

Also, can you forward me the email (bacomhelper@gmail.com), your exec club number and booking ref.

Kind regards,

Dilly

Hi Dilly,

This is both when I purchase the ticket and when I get the usual MMB email a week before the flight.

I am sorry and don't mean to offend, but who are you? I don't want to forward personal information to a gmail address. In any case, I am sure that this is a routine email. Nothing special about it. As I understand it, non-elite members cannot choose their seats in advance. As I said, I'm Gold, but the people traveling are not. So why tell them they have the choice to choose their seats when in fact they don't?

Stimpy, I assume you're not actually travelling with the family members which is why some of us are scratching our heads wondering why you can't manage the booking normally?

Exactly. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. I'm not on the itinerary, but I made the booking. So when I connect to MMB, it says "Choose your seats". But when I go through the process of choosing the seats, it later says "sorry, not possible to choose your seats."

Dilly (BA Helper) is an employee of BA that helps with issues raised on here...

no offence, but whilst we know (or many on this forum know) that Dilly works for BA, rather then post a gmail address requesting the OP's member number (which makes it very suspicious for any straight thinking intelligent person due to current rounds of identity theft going around), it would be IMHO better if ba com helper had the BA IT dept. create a common mailbox for just this type of queries to which ba com helper had access to and which would not give out his personal mailbox. He could then PM this individually to those members who are requesting help (to avoid a 'deluge' of emails which may happen if you publicly post the address) and the official address would vouch for ba com helpers identity as well.

(now, I don't know how willing BA's IT dept. would be in doing something like this...)

Nevertheless, even within BA there may be nefarious individuals who may in desperate times, use a members credentials and information for some good of their own... you can never be too careful. It really depends on how trusting one can be.

just my two cents coming from someone who works in IT related security...

Of course I believe Dilly and the other BA posters are providing a massive service to this place, no argument against that

Although I haven't been here for long, I can vouch for Dilly as I used Dilly's kind services a few times.

I'll also vouch for dilly, who resolved and $800 refund issue and even got a buy 1 get 1 free coupon re-instated for me; I deserved the refund, but not the reinstatement,

I think that's a good idea, on teh SPG forum the employees have an @spg.com email set-up, granted BA is probably much more bureaucratic!

Stimpy - I can vouch for Dilly and that he works for BA. He's a tremendous help to a great number of people here and I know lots of us here are extremely pleased to have him around. He really will do all he can to get to the root of the problem for you.

Thanks everyone. I'm in touch with Dilly now. My complaint isn't a really serious one and perhaps I've never noticed Dilly here before because I've never had a problem with the website. So well done BA.

I do agree with Shinigami that it would certainly appear safer if Dilly had a BA.com address. But I also agree with others that this might not be possible given the amount of lawyers at BA, and their power over external interfaces.

But all that aside, I still don't know why MMB tells me to go ahead and choose seats when I put in this booking reference, even though it's not possible to choose seats. Hopefully Dilly can send this to the right group of people who can fix this little item.

That's a fair point and I will take this away.

Thanks to all who vouched for me - appreciate it

Dilly
