Exclamation Madrid Crash - Airport No Longer Closed

Apologies for Spanish translation courtesy of google...

A plane has left the runway at Madrid Barajas airport shortly before the 15.00 hours per takeoff, as reported by National Radio.

The plane has left the runway at Barajas off and ended crashing in the vicinity of Terminal 4, in an accident in which, according to health sources, there are several dead, according to the agency EFE reported.

A spokesman for the emergency service in Madrid, Samur, has explained in statements to Radio National that the accident occurred at takeoff from the terminal T4 and soon the plane has fallen to the ground.

The head of Samur, who has indicated that the accident was "very cumbersome", has reported that at the moment is not confirmed victims have been produced and will have to wait to know.

According to TVE, the plane belongs to the company Spanair and was heading towards Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with about 160 passengers. The accident occurred at takeoff from runway 36 and at the moment are closed runways for takeoffs.

Apparently the device has been burned down after the accident and from several kilometers away can see a big column of smoke. I could have left the track in the second takeoff attempt. This is the flight JK5022, bound for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Perhaps the thread title should be changed to actually mention "crash" in it?
Surely there should be more interest in this then just 3 and a half posts...

Great reporting by the BBC "Aviation Expert"...

"When an engine fails during take off, this is inevitable".

He's already speculating that a fuel line could have broken, and that fuel leaked onto the hot engine causing a fire.

FFS... where do they get these so called experts from.

Chris yates is his name and the british media have declared him an Aviation expert and love him. Whenever there is a story regading an airport or airplane, the news cannot be finished without him giving a comment or two.

I think most FTers or Airliners.net are better experts than him. He always points out the most obvious point!

He just stated that "It is pretty inevitable that the runway which this aircraft took off from is closed!" Duh its a plane crash on take off, of course they would close it!

Spanair's web-site is redirecting to an info page. Link

As of 16:00, the statement is:

Spanair regrets to confirm that its flight number JK 5022, from Madrid to Las Palmas de Gran Canarias was involved in an incident at Madrid, at 14.45 hrs local time today.

JK is a code share* flight with Lufthansa LH 2554

Spanair is doing everything possible to assist the Spanish authorities at this difficult time, and has established a local help-line number for relatives or friends of those who may have been on board.
The number is. +34 800 400 200
Spanair will provide further information as soon as it becomes available.

Note to Editors: we ask journalists to contact the media information centre that has been specially established to provide you with updated information. The number is +34 91 625 87 03. Please do not call the passenger help line.

El País are saying 45 dead out of 166 pax. Reports vary widely.

This and immediately preceding the other guy said "all of the passengers were on the aircraft at the time."
