from the BBC just now:

"BA chief executive Willie Walsh said "I'm absolutely delighted with the way things have gone so far. I think it's great."

I'm sure those BA passengers suffering delays/cancellations/no luggage would disagree. What a silly thing to say

To be honest, I think you're quids in (but I feel sorry for the raft of folk who have been shafted by this failure)...
Brilliant isn't it? Keep quiet, keep drinking, collect 10,000 miles, do not pass Go.

They only do Bacon BAguettes until midday apparently. Disaster. However, if you ask nicely, they'll bring you a whole bottle of champagne for yourself.

Just received this in my inbox...(my bold) - gotta give 'em credit for optimism!

Dear Mr JSC,

Five and a half years ago the building of our new home began in our most visionary project to date. Today we opened the doors. There is no more waiting... Terminal 5 welcomes you.

At Terminal 5 everything has been streamlined and designed to make your journey through the terminal calm and relaxed. And this morning we saw all the planning fall into place.

Check-in and Security have been designed to speed you through to Departures in just 10 minutes*. And with a shopping concourse to rival London's West End, our premium flagship lounge complex, Galleries, and the state-of-the-art baggage system, you'll discover nothing has been overlooked to ensure your time at Terminal 5 is spent in a most relaxing and enjoyable way.

As a new measure to aid the smooth running of the terminal and avoid delays, when you depart from Terminal 5 you must pass through ticket presentation and Security and be ready to fly at least 35 minutes before your flight departs or you won't be allowed onto your flight. If you are travelling with hand luggage only, you may also need to pass through Passport and Visa Check. For other important information, please take some time to click on the button below for a handy guide to travelling calmly through Terminal 5!

To be fair to Mr. Walsh, I think that interview was done before the protests and the baggage problems.

Hey, take it easy... remember what happened to CT-UK on the way to BLR?

Then again you should be ok so long as you don't switch to Gin at some point.

I guess the only downside is that you're a bit stuck in the one lounge now, as surely trying to access another would raise some questions at the door. Ho hum, hopefully all will be fixed up for my T5 induction in 10 days time!

I flew out of ATH on the first day of its operation in 2001 with no issues whatsoever (and, if there is an EU country that's effed up in terms of organisation etc...that'd have to be Greece).

Seriously, a few delays would be fine...same for a couple of missing baggage items...but the scale of the cock-up is just mind-boggling...

Quite right too. Thank God we chose Galleries First and not Club. We'll be fine, don't you worry...

Arrived at T5 from MAN this afternoon;

1. Delayed by about an hour into LHR - "teething problems at T5"
2. Sat on Taxiway for 10-15 minutes - "whilst a stand becomes free"
3. Taxied for another 10 minutes to a gate - "there will be a delay of....1 hour () before we can get a BA representative to move the jetway to the aircraft"
4. We actually disembarked via the jetway about 15 minutes later.....to find the door locked, thus we were unable to exit the post jetway holding area
5. A bemused looking BAA chap arrived and unlocked the door

Even the Captain was expressed his disbelief of 3. above!

Look, I know none of the above is exactly a huge deal, but wouldn't you think that they might have been expecting us

Welcome to London and Heathrow T5!

Obviously, thing are not going well but, notwithstanding my earlier posts, I must admit I am struggling to work out how bad the baggage system really is for the typical arriving passenger.

The intrepid BBC newshounds reporting on their website have managed to track down passengers with horror stories of a 1hr 15min wait between arrival and receiving bags.

Now that's not good, but it's hardly newsworthy. Obviously things are much worse for some, but I can't real tell if that is a smallish minortiy (which seems to be the BA line) or a huge proportion of pax.

To see troubles with baggage doesn't surprise me. I will be more interested to see how well the system works in a week/months time once everyone has adjusted and has been using the system for a period of time.

The latest Sky News report says that now all the lifts in the terminal have broken down

Suddenly my planned T5 flight in exactly 2 weeks seems too close for comfort, given the increasing list of glitches!

Just a few teething problems. On the plus side though at least the horses in the lounge were ready on time.
