Call me a cynic but is there any connection with what has gone on during the opening day and the notoriously militant BA baggage handlers?

What a wonderful opportunity they had today to give BA a bloody nose. What an opportunity to say to WW "You may think all the problems and working practices have been swept away by T5 - but you need to remember we are still here and we are not to be messed with..."

Just a thought...........

It really is a shambles, isn't it...

They're still showing this on their website

Quote:
We are experiencing significant disruption to flights departing from Heathrow Terminal 5 due to problems associated with processing customers’ hold baggage.

As a result, customers due to travel on flights departing Terminal 5 this evening will be able to travel with hand baggage only.

Flights from other Heathrow terminals are operating normally and customers flying from other terminals should check in as usual.
even though trans-continental flights are going with hold baggage...

BA expected to release written details of tomorrow's anticipated disruption shortly before 2200GMT tonight (genuinely).

In keeping with the transition to T5, around one in five words are expected to be missing from the statement as originally drafted, and most of the remaining words will be printed without vowels.

Charming.

No, there isn't actually. It's all been equipment failures. From what has been posted on here, it's the 'notoriously militant BA baggage handlers' who have been getting out what bags have been going out, by doing it manually. Bit unfair to blame them, when they've probably been working their cotton socks off to handle what they can I think

wouldn't surprise me...

one thing that is for sure is heads really really must roll this time. Time for WW to either do something meaningful or walk.

I suspect that there will be loads of cancellations tomorrow. I just wonder if......dare I say it....that they will move some flights back to T1 - even if just for a few days so that they can take the pressure off things for the time being.............

What happened today has nothing to do with so-called 'notoriously militant baggage handlers' , that is a cheap shot , they are an easy target ,in fact ever since the Gate Gourmet dispute a few years ago the unions grip on LHR's ramp operations has been seriously weakened , believe me when i say they do not have anything like the muscle they used to have.

There has been too many poorly thought out changes going on andtrying to cost cut your way to a management bonus drags the corporations reputation through the mud.

A truly awful day for BA , and i dont think it will be much better tomorrow sorry to say.

Well there are equipment failures; and there are equipment "failures" if you see what I mean. Years ago I worked for a large aerospace company with one particularly militant and difficult department. Equipment always used to "fail" at the most convenient moments. A hot Friday afternoon, the visit of a local dignitary or some VIP from the head office - things would always just seem to fail at these moments.

Is easy to make something technical fail if you know how - and can easily be made to look like a complete coincidence and a random event. I'm just curious as to with all the very extensive trials over quite a long period, this happens today - and so spectacularly too.

And is the very department that has held BA to ransom so many times - and that WW has so publicly stated will be so changed when T5 opened.

OK, OK I'm a cynic. But as I said, what a heaven sent opportunity any mischief makers had today.

As I said, just a thought.......

Disgraceful.
Regardless of whether or not Gareth Kirkwood is responsible for this, he should not have been put in front of the cameras. One lesson BA should have learned a long time ago from previous LHR fiascos is that it needs experienced spokespeople are effective at handling at the media. He looked extremely awkward reading out the statement (as would anyone who has not been in front of the TV cameras before, nevermind on a day as stressful as this), and simply walking away looked disastrous.

You would have thought that on a day like this BA would have a team ready in the terminal to deal with the media, nevermind during operational difficulties as severe as this.

The communication on ba.com about this has been extremely poor today, and there is no excuse for it. Again, BA should have been well prepared to deal with this today.

Quite honestly I would prefer it if it was millitant baggage people.

That would mean that the f**king morons who designed and built this £4.3BILLION white elephant haven't just made an almighty cock up and the thing does in fact work properly...
