AVOD- a solution close???

Spies at LHR tell me BA Eng have built a fully (non) working replica cabin for the Rockwell Collins AVOD blokes to troubleshoot with.Apparently we have them full time at the mo while they work on our problems with AVOD. It seems to be a clash of some sorts between the cabin PA system and the IFE system. It sends the AVOD into a spin if a PA is carried out while AVOD running. Quick tip is to press 46 then reset on a PA handset...they are aware of BA's unhappiness with the situation....still , I'm sure whichever manager specced the system for BA got his bonus....probably the same twonk who ordered the 777 seats (now piled up at CWL) without sorting out the g loading first.......

This will disappoint a lot of people who are relying on the non-working AVOD for an extra 10,000 miles every time they fly NNCW.

I have never complained about this as I don't care about AVOD, although I did get 10,000 miles earlier this year when a CE seat wasn't working properly which, as is standard, the apology letter recognized "must have been very frustrating" in three different places.

The compensation is now up to 25000 miles for BAEC NA members!

I expect to see my first 25000 miles for defective AVOD post in the next 10 days.

That's exactly what happened to me. JFK-MAN worked fine until it was trying to load at the same time that a tannot annoucement kicked in. It was near the end of the flight so I didn't worrt about it but I did notice that it was the tannoy that killed it.

*Edit to put JFK-MAN*

LHR-MAN - What on earth was I thinking !!!!

LHR-MAN? It only gets switched on for 5-10 minutes when the 767 operates the Shuttle!

How appropriate a "fully (non) working replica". Just like on the aircraft.

i believe some of the issues also relate to the on-board environment - take-off turbulence, temp variations, power cycling etc, which would be difficult to replicate on the ground. hopefully they are making progress though....

(you'd think they would have done a full scale mockup test before deployment though)

QF had execatly the same problems with its system for about a year after inroduction. All the bugs have been ironed out now. As a result, QF have specced a Panasonic system for the A380s.

With BA being the very first airline in the world to introduce this revolutionary, ground breaking thing called AVOD its not surprising there are teething problems ....

Hey, hang on a minute ....

LOL

We got 5 x 20,000 after our recent family trip to IAD - eventually, initially 3 got 20,000 and I and one of my daughters got 15,000. It seemed a bit churlish to quibble on an ex-gratia settlement but 10,000 miles is 10,000 miles, so quibble I did (Churl that I am ) and it was soon rectified. (Rather pleased to have got 20,000 miles for my 2 year old travelling on an infant ticket too (with his own seat naturally) ).

On the LHR-NBO G-BNLZ yesterday and my first time with the NGCW ^, the AVOD wouldn't start on the entire plane so I started mentally composing my note to BA and looking forward to a few freebie miles. I even asked the CSD for a comments card. After numerous attempts the lass got it working and then arrived with my comments card which I thanked her for and then gave back uncompleted as the problem had been fixed.

She looked so relieved that it was a complaint about AVOD and not the crew, I assured her it was not the crew, and this lunchtime at the crew hotel, I presented her with a copy of a very positive e-mail sent this moring to STS at Waterworld thanking the crew for their service. Shame the flight is full tonight otherwise I would have been happy to have the same crew back to LHR.

Oh and taking this further OT - No problems with the NGCW seat at all despite my fears of springboards and collapsing arms and footstools. ^

Not sure if you were being sarcastic there, so just going to add that the QF system has improved a lot, but its definitely not bug free as yet. For example it was down and couldn't be restarted (entire plane) last week SFO-SYD.

I believe IFE_Wizard posted in the past that RC are not offering a system for the A380, so a vendor change was necessary in any case.

Thats right.....when Airbus laid out the requirements for the IFE system, Rockwell Collins declined to put a proposal forward, something about no cooling fans in the system, wireless components at seat end etc...

The delays with the wiring have been heavily pointing towards the IFE (main components) that is being fitted to the A380 so lets see how that system performs!

Justin, how nice to see someone reads my posts. 100% correct that RC do not have and have a system for the A380 or the Boeing 787. This was announced some two years ago. Only choice for airlines with these aircraft is Panasonic or Thales.

Also regarding the Qantas system, yes they are still having problems but not as many as BA.
