Question BA Amex Card Refund Question

I stopped spending on my card a couple of months ago as I only need another £200 to trigger the 241 voucher and I don't want that to happen until November.

However, we bought an LCD TV on the card a few months ago which has now gone wrong and we've been offered a refund (£1500). Obviously the money will be refunded back to the card which then puts me in credit to the tune of £1500. I assume that this amount will be offset against the 10k needed to trigger the 241 which means that I now need to spend £1700 in order to trigger the voucher?

The last thing I want to do is trigger the 241 earlier than intended so any advice appreciated.

I assume that Amex will not recover miles from me, but that I will not start accruing miles again until the £1500 credit has been used up?

If you have a positive balance on your next months statement I think they will take the miles back as well.

I had a similar situation - returned a TV I'd bought, but never had any miles deducted from my balance. I checked the statement of the refund month and two months thereafter.

Odd - I thought refunds were treated as "negative spend", so whilst there will not be a specific minus amount of miles on your statement, if would net off the total earned.

I have had miles "reclaimed" from my Amex account when I had a positive balance. The only time I have ever had a significant positive balance is after refunds for BA tickets which I cancelled, and these miles were always deducted from my account. I am not sure whether this would also apply to a non BA purchase, but see no reason why it wouldn't.

Thanks for the replies but I'm happy to report that I will not find out what would have happened in this situation (although I was far more worried about triggering the 241 early than losing miles) as we noticed that the credit card used wasn't noted on the receipt so we simply had the credit refunded to another card. Now watching TV on a 17" portable though as they didn't have the model we wanted in stock ......

Related follow-up question

Will my BA AmEx card be cancelled if I process a refund back onto it after having changed my BAEC membership country to a European one?

If the answers is yes, then I guess I will have to choose between the 241 or the gold status. Any suggestions?

Situation:
-approaching the end of my EC membership year with 810 TPs, planning on changing membership country to retain Gold
-£500 to go before triggering the 241 voucher
-have booked some (refundable) flights for later in the year that I will probably cancel; this may not be processed before I need to change my membership country
-planning to "move" back to the UK next summer to use the voucher

Just to come back to the refund question and the recovery of miles.

My Amex statement balance this month was £2984.35, this was £3011.79 spend, less £27.44 refunds. Spend was all non-BA, so 1.5miles/£.

Total miles credited this morning to my BAEC a/c was 4476. (£2984 x 1.5)

As posted above, whilst there wasn't a separate claw back of miles for the refunds, they were treated as "negative spend" and reduced the miles earned for the month.
