My map suggests the South.....
(btw - I think Lisbon might be a winner unless anyone starts suggesting Porto).
Yes, heading from the airport, you travel around the city, past the old viaduct, over the bridge to the south side of the river, and on the right is Costa Caparica. As someone else said it is not really glamorous - not if you are from Bahrain - but the hotels and restaurants along the beech are all connected by the little train.

So what about Estoril on the North coast??? Any good?
I like Lisbon. It is a very underrated city with a lot of charm and, importantly, very low hotel prices! It also has excellent rail links with Cascais and Estoril, so even if you stay in the city it is very easy and very short hop to get out to the coast.
If you are taking the family, there is a decent (at least, it was decent five years ago) 3* aparthotel called the Eden right in the centre of town, close to the station and with a rooftop pool. It used to be run by Citadines but I think its now part of the Portuguese VIP chain.

Do you need to fly? The Normandy coast is ideal at this time of the year, and so I recommend the twin seaside towns of Deauville and Trouville. Le Havre is the nearest ferry port but one can drive from Paris in about 2hrs.
The ice-cream on the Promenade is excellent, and so is the beach. You can find many picnic spots around here. There is a famous casino and plenty of restaurants serving fresh seafood. It's a nice and relaxing place to go to with a young family.
