Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. the guide to using ITA matrix in post #2 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

There's no automatic upgrade for EXP's on international flights or for lower status passengers using accumulated upgrade stickers so the practice seen on domestic flights doesn't happen. Of course, mileage upgrades are possible where available just as with Avios on BA.

Maybe not as often (see above) but if they reroute you, domestic flights may also affected. Then it will be likely you will not fly as you wanted (route and class).

Just done a search for July on ITA and looks like the ex CDG sale has finished even although it said it was extended to the 5th May.

I think that's doing a disservice to AA. Their fare rules stated that the sale ended at Midnight on 3rd May, and it duly ended at Midnight (Pacific Time) on 3rd May, which was 09:00 in the UK.

There were seemingly erroneous fare rules showing on Matrix ITA which stated 5th May. There doesn't seem to be any evidence that this date was ever declared by AA, in fact one poster has stated that they checked the fare rules on aa.com and even though Matrix said 5th May the as.com date remained as 3rd May.

I don't think it was 'extended then pulled'. It ended when AA said it was going to end. I was pricing up a journey at 09:00 on 4th May and the price jumped at exactly that time, not 11:00 as it states in the link you posted.

It was actually earlier than 11am now that I look back as you can see here

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/premi...ca-too-11.html

However, midnight Pacific time is only 8am UK time so there is still some sort of discrepancy. Also it doesn't explain why the fare dropped by a couple of hundred euros towards the end.

To be fair the new date was highlighted by another FT'er and I checked both itamatrix and EF to confirm the new date. Sales have been extended in the past at the last minute. Clearly the end date was changed. Previously the fare rules had stated an end date of 3 May, again I saw this both on itamatrix and EF. I agree that I don't fully understand the intention with the date change and this may have been an error by AA.

No, I don't think that is correct. Travel agents saw both the extension to May 5th and the price reduction on their GDS as well. So this was indeed loaded by the airline. Which is what ITA shows anyway, I think.

So maybe the reduction was the mistake?

And I also cannot reconcile the time difference.

PST is GMT (UTC/Zulu) - 8 and
PDT is BST - 8 (BST is GMT + 1)
while
PST is CET - 9 and
PDT is CEST - 9

So it should have been pulled at 08:00 London time. Unless the system stays at PST year round, since PST is BST - 9.

Anyone know for sure how these "time limits" are handled? Are the all based on PST/PDT for US airlines?

I am sure it was still available at 08:24 GMT (09:24 BST), as that is when I put mine on hold.

Hold that I could not pay for as AA keeps saying I must have booked through a TA (despite taking screenshots and having an email from AA.COM saying 'Thanks for booking a hold on AA.COM' which I offered to email and tweet over to them with no success). So I could not pay for it and nobody at AA.COM could find any fare quote.... go figure.

I wasn't affected personally because I'd held an itinerary which was honoured beyond the fare being pulled but what happened still seems a little odd (fare reduced late on 3rd May and increased availability from what was there earlier in the day) and I'm equally certain that the fares were still available beyond midnight Pacific Time on 3rd.

Yesterday's news now and I'm more than optimistic other opportunities will come along.

I'm pondering ways to get 560TP with reasonably short total journey time and cost starting in LON.

I've become somewhat fixated on the XXX-HEL-AGP return being the key element of this because of the 140TP HEL-AGP segment in J. Adding LON-HEL-XXX using nested itineraries has been part of the strategy as well, because of the 80TP LHR-HEL. The HEL-XXX segments then pick up 40TP each way, making a total of 600TP.

Going via OSL seems to be best value at ~£1100, but connections are too tight for separate tickets (IMHO ) - they join up on a ~£4000 C fare on ITA for the whole itinerary but feature 45m connections . ARN has better (~2h) connections between the separate tickets, and effectively takes two daylight days for the round trip while the price nudges towards £1300+.

Are there better options for this general route, or better routes overall? Is 300TP per day from LON doable some other way at ~£2 / TP ?
