Glasses in room teperature, room locked. 7 of 8 wines were unanimously judged better after a night "in the open" the 8th equivalent/not worse.

Boiled cabbage? IMHO only possible if someone had drunk directly from the bottle, thus contaminating the content with oral bacteriae flora.
Well, I report as I find: to me the wine had an unmistakeable smell of boiled cabbage. Experiments such as you mention are all very well, but I certainly wouldn't intentionally leave a 1st or 2nd growth claret that I had paid good money for (and that was drinking well) overnight at room temperature and I suspect that goes for 99.9% of those fortunate enough to be able to afford to drink really fine wine.

Being able to tell a bottle of wine has been opened for 10 to 12 hours is exceptionally difficult, unless done by a method other than tasting. And those wines should be better after a few hours open, not worse.

That said, there could have been something else wrong with it.

The most common reason for an ugly smell would be corc defect. Beeing opened properly, that should have been clear for the waiter, after smelling the corc.

Is price an important factor when you drink/taste champagne?

While it definitely isn't the most crucial one, I do think that it says something about what your host wants to spend on you, especially if there is a certain consistency in a cheaper Champagne, cheaper food ingredients, etc. I am lucky enough not to need to spend time in GF as I have CCR access, but the latest things I have heard from Gold family members have been somewhat discouraging.

Well, yes!

The best time to drink really expensive champagne is when it is free!

Well, I might love it that JL gives me Salon for free in F, but it does remain an outstanding Champagne anyway, including on the only two occasions in my life when I have actually bought it!

The Henriot is both cheap and crap. The rose is just about drinkable.

No contest for me, I'd even choose Castelnau over the DP! I think DP is a horrid wine.

+1. I wouldn't go as far as horrid myself but it absolutely doesn't do it for me and I'd never spend money on it and it is by far my most disliked of the supposed "top class" Champagne. Salon, Comtes de Champagne, Cristal, and Belle Epoque on the other hand...
