747 vs 777 World Traveler

Hi All

I have the option to fly the BA 747 or the BA 777-200 bulkhead LHR to ORD. Flight numbers are 297 or 295

Which one would you suggest? I will be traveling with my wife and 4 month old baby.

Looking at legroom, overall comfort etc.

Thanks in advance.

The majority of B777 have the newer seats and a better IFE system, the legroom is the same, if it's the B777-200 it only offers one suitable row and it's in the centre, the -300 offers more choice.

Yes, the majority of 4 class B777-200 based at LHR have these.

IFE and refurbed cabins are most important to me in Y. You can check these sites for route history and cabin status:
http://www.thebasource.com/aircraft.html
http://ftdashboard.net/dest/ord.htm

The 297 seems to almost always be operated by the 777-300ER, so I'd definitly choose that over the 747 operated flight. Better IFE, USB available and more modern seats.

The refurbished -200 are as good as the -300.

Very interesting to see it mostly 777-300. When i go to pick my seat out it shows the bulkhead row 26... which would correspond to the 777-200. Is it possible for this to change over time? my flight is not till november 10th.

The schedules change around the 25th October so that could be the reason you see a -200.

Ok so meaning they will change the planes and after the 25th the route will be serviced by the -200... or I should look again after the 25th to see if they made a change to the 300?

Looks like the 24th is the last day for the -300.

The 747 Y cabin is outdated and overdue for refurbishment in terms of both seats and IFE.

Some aircraft are getting this but the chances of getting it will be low when you're due to travel.

I wouldn't risk it and would be choosing the 777.

Ok so I will go with the 777-200. Unfortunately they are switching out the -300s.

What IFE system do they have in the 777-200.. does it have the USB ports? Seat guru shows no power in any of the seats.

If you're lucky enough to get the new Traveller cabin then you'll have shared seat power, USB ports and the Thales IFE.

If it's the old Traveller cabin then you'll have no seat power, no USB and much lower quality IFE unfortunately.

Have a look at this post to see the difference. Many of the 777-200's at Heathrow are fitted with the new cabin, so you stand a good chance ^

I'd ignore Seatguru which is wildly inaccurate.

thebasource.com is a good reference for seating queries on BA as well as the information on here too as per the link provided by gingeola
