So when is G-CIVF flying in service next, quite surprised it came in from CWL and has been on the ground for nearly three days, unless of course various proving runs and tests are going on while the aircraft is on the ground.
G–CIVF is indeed having ground trials / tests. Mainly for the new IFE system.

This is fairly simple. It costs significantly less to partly refurbish an aircraft than purchase a new one. The aircraft being partly refurbished aren't end-of-life yet.

The noise levels won't go down much with a new paint job.

That must be the sole reason. If oil prices stayed high, fleet modernisation would have progressed more rapidly. But then we'd see more of these shabby 787s that aren't that great either .

I wasn't aware anyone has lost hearing due to flying in 747s.

Some of us prefer the 747 over an A380. The youngest BA ones have 10 years of servicable life in them and I shall try and fly as many as possible before they go.

Is there any information about when the remaining candidates will be sent off for refurbishment or will they want to run CIVF for a while first to make sure they've got all the bugs out?

And am I correct in understanding that all the 744s that aren't part of this refurbishment will be retired soon (for whatever value of "soon")?

I don't think so. As I understand it only 18 aircraft are being refurbed and it will be many years yet before there are only 18 747s left in the fleet.

Would be delighted to be corrected if I'm wrong though!

Well, I really hope that before too long there'll be no aircraft with the Rockwell Collins IFE on the JFK route. I actively try to only book on 777-operated flights because I find the Thales IFE so much better for distracting me during a long flight. I'd actually prefer to fly Y with Thales over W with Rockwell Collins.

The currently known information is in the retirements tracker post (link in my signature).

From a quick count of those numbers it looks like approx. 6 aircraft whose retirement isn't planned until late 2018/2019, and a further 12 or so with no planned date yet (presumably later than 2019).

Am I right in thinking that the ones going from hi-J to mid-J won't get the refurb, just a basic seat swap?

I'm not quite sure what you mean here. There are 42 aircraft, and 12 of them have planned retirement dates (subject to change) over a period up to March 2019. That makes 30 with no planned retirement dates known.

I meant excluding the 18 getting the refurb... in relation to npjs's question about whether the unrefurbished a/c are retiring soon.
