The gate announcement has just reiterated the 22:00 arrival estimate. Boarding in about 20 minutes apparently - which would be 15 minutes after SDT.

That's where I found the time.

But I think it must be a mistake. Can it really add an additional six hours to stop in SNN, pick up some pax and fuel, and take off again?

According to the BA APP, the BA 179 is now going direct to JFK and NOT stopping in Shannon as had previously been advised.

I agree with that, but I don't think it's that simple. The GDS appears to be fed live from operational systems. This includes updating estimated arrival times a short time after the flight has taken off (not merely departed), which I imagine is likely to happen when the operational systems are fed the updated information from the aircraft.

So if the GDS is showing an arrival time of 0355, it might well be because there is some live flight plan that is currently based on an arrival time of 0355, and which (like we frequently see to flight plans) gets changed and tweaked as the situation develops. I doubt it was a mistake in the sense that someone with fat fingers has sat there and pressed the "3" key in error.

Anyway, BA179's ETD has now moved to 1845.

CIHY: According to BA the 179 should be pushing back right now and with the originally scheduled arrival time into JFK of 20:55. Not stopping at SNN.

Not quite pushing back yet, but the doors are closed, the seat belt signs are on and the air bridge has departed, so it shouldn't be long. Although we still appear to have ground crew on board?!

See you all on the other side!

Mind you according to the BA App, the 179's cancelled sector from SNN to JFK might have been the world's longest ever flight: dep. SNN at midnight on 1 Jan 1970 arriving JFK more than 45 years later on 17 April 2015.

How tight are the A318s on range? Do wonder if BA should be using DUB pre-clearance at some stage, given the number of LON flights they have there'd be a lot more options for accommodating pax if issues arose.

Checked!
Range - 3,600m
JFK-DUB - 3,179m
JFK-SNN - 3,081m

(Did BA just have the LGW flights to DUB when the CWLCY flights started? No LHR as pre-bmi, was there the half-hearted and short-lived LCY route back then?)

Bunratty Castle Hotel in nearby Bunratty and next door to the Durty Nelly's pub. Stayed there about 3 years ago and was very pleasant. Trip advisor still has good reviews.

I feel for the pax stuck in Shannon. I would really be fuming if that was me. I hope they get sorted out and can get to JFK tonight.

What was the story on how they ended up there, did the A318 go tech after landing?

Pilot has just announced that the aircraft went tech but customs wouldn't allow mixing of the pre cleared CWLCY passengers and the LHR passengers so the rescue mission had to be aborted.

Sorry to those stranded, we did our best to come and get you...
