Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Prospero's guide to using ITA matrix in post 3 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year)

Or a slightly more interesting fun run

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VLL via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

Arrow BA Tier Point Runs | 2015 master thread

This thread is a continuation of the hugely popular BA Tier Point runs thread. This is intended to be a starting point for finding key origin and destinations to tailor your tier point runs, but you will still need to do some leg work to find the correct dates and flights. Also, don't forget that with some of these fares there will be a positioning cost associated to get to the start of the tier point run.

Acknowledgments
Special thanks all our members who graciously supported the 2014 BA Tier Point runs thread, in particular those who tirelessly updated the thread's wikipost. Much of the new information incorporated into this primer was transferred over from the old wiki.

Introduction
Unlike Avios points which can be earned through a multitude of activities, Tier Points can only be earned through the pursuit of flying and are earned on all commercial BA and oneworld fares (subject to a few exceptions). The number of Tier Points you accrue is entirely dependent on the fare class (or selling class in BA lingo) your tickets are booked in. Below is the full earning chart which covers BA flights and oneworld partner flights. Please note, while flights on BA partners such as Alaska Airlines, Aer Lingus, and Meridiana do earn Avios points, they will not award Tier Points. See http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/briti...l#post24088166 for more details.

† This table now reflects our understanding that the TP earn rate for lowest economy is applicable to some non-BA flights as well as BA flights, but the ba.com calculator has not yet been updated to show these, so for non-BA airlines these lists are subject to official confirmation.
Lowest economy booking classes:
BA: Q, O, and G fares
AA: G, Q, N, O, and S fares
AY: A, G, N, O, Q, R, S, W, and Z fares
IB: Q, O, and P fares
JL: N and Q fares
QR: T, Q, and O fares
UL: L, R, V, S, N, Q, O, and G fares
US: reportedly also has lowest booking classes, but the list is unknown at the time of writing.

BA/AY short haul+ routes:
Several short haul routes earn double Tier Points due to their extended length, such as:
LHR to/from ATH, HEL, IST, JMK, JTR, KBP, KGS, LCA, LED, LPA, OTP, and SOF
LGW to/from ACE, ALG, BJV, DLM, FUE, HER, LCA, LPA, MLA, PFO, SKG, RAK, RHO, TFS, and TIA
LCY to/from JMK and JTR
MAN to/from HEL (operated by BE for AY)

The following charts illustrate these routes currently operated out of London

BA: LHR - HEL | LED
AY: MAN - HEL

LCY - JMK | JTR
BA: LGW - ACE | ALG | FUE | LPA | MLA | SKG | RAK | TFS | TIA

Starting your run from Continental Europe
Here are a few popular examples to give you a flavour of what can be achieved at a relatively respectable price. Note, any fare prices shown in this post are indicative and reflect the rates checked at the time of writing. Fares do vary considerably, so check this thread from time to time for prevailing fares/offers/promotions etc

Naturally, to get to the most cost advantageous origin, positioning flights (and most likely, overnight accommodation) is an inevitable factor. Dublin is the flavour of the moment for cheap (I class) transatlantic flights in business class. Thanks to the BA/AA/US Joint Business Venture, it is now possible to construct connections within the United States for very little extra. However, the lowest I class fares usually come with stop over and Saturday night stay restrictions, but it is possible to spread out your itinerary by constructing connections of up to 24 hours, if you prefer a trip that is gentler on the body.

North American domestic first/business class runs
Central America and the Caribbean have become hot spots for TP earning frenzies out of the United States in recent years. AA's Instant Upgrade fares from the west cost to Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Nicaragua amongst many other destinations in the region deliver excellent Tier Point yields. So much so, that with a little bit of planning and of course time, it is possible to rack up TPs at an alarming rate.
Planning and booking tips
  • When pricing up comparative routes, Google Flights is by far the most speedy and simple method. Enter origin and destination; dates of travel; select business class; select Oneworld in Airline filter; then Expand map to display requested route and comparative fares for nearly destinations.
  • If you need greater complexity, the ITA Matrix tool is highly recommended. It displays a wider range of options than Google Flights and detailed fare rules. Its great for trip planning at a forensic level. A guide to using the ITA Matrix tool can be found here. Note, the ITA Matrix tool cannot be used to book tickets
  • If you're old school, like me, the first step is to download and immerse oneself in AA's flight schedule: The current timetable is available, here.
  • Familiarise yourself with AA.com's Multi-City booking tool. Don't leave more than 24 hours between flights. Use the Sort by schedule option to locate the exact flights you found on the ITA Matrix tool.
  • Select city pairs (if possible) in excess of 2,000 miles apart (see charts below)
  • It is worth adding a few cautionary words about AA Domestic First where the service shares a flight number with an international flight, as J, D, and I class inventory may be sold before regular F, A, and P inventory is offered for sale on the down gauged domestic flight(s).
  • Avoid AA codeshare flights on non-oneworld metal. There is no TP credit on these flights
  • A321 (32B) - These AA narrow-bodies ply Transcon routes between JFK and LAX/SFO with business and first class. Well equipped, they are a very comfortable way to travel between coasts
  • 757 - As fantastically racy as these aircraft are, the first class seat requires a health warning. Think very carefully before committing yourself to a 5 hour red-eye 757 flight. Row 1 on the 757 is also worth avoiding.
  • 777 - Yes the big birds do operate on a few domestic routes (eg. MIA-LAX). Unlike their senior, and more petite 767-300 siblings, seats on the 777 aircraft are sold as business as well as the usual first and economy classes
  • MD-80 - Once the workhorse of AA's fleet but numbers are dwindling fast. Its first class cabin provides a reassuringly quiet ride
  • MCO - As American Airlines' low yield focus city, Orlando is your friend
  • Schedule changes - AA routinely gives its domestic timetable a jolly good shake (twice a year) so if you've booked your flights with plenty of advanced notice, expect a few changes to happen between now and the date of departure
  • For more information about using the ITA Matrix tool, planning trips that begin in Continental Europe and Ireland, as well as airports favourable to back-to-back turnarounds, see http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/briti...ing-guide.html
The following diagrams illustrate American Airlines and US Airways routes greater than 2,000 miles. Note, the forward cabin on AA flights serving Canada and the Caribbean are sold as business rather than first class. Conversely, US Airways currently markets the forward cabin as First but this may change once the AA/US merger is finalised. Routes are subject to change so again downloading the latest timetable from aa.com is recommended.

* AA transcon 3 class service (A321T and B772) with First, Business and Economy
§ AA two class service with Business and Economy

Looking at the example below and having taken a LAS-MIA-SJU excursion myself a couple of years ago, I enjoyed the experience immensely. While not working the system with the same zeal as others and with that failing to join the ranks of the Managua GGLs, the two days R&R spent on the ocean front proved to be a splendidly rewarding by product.

Something to be aware of with premium cabins on flights operated by American Airlines: flights operating entirely within the United States are marketed as first class; those operating outwith the US are marketed as business class.

I've highlighted the LAS-LAX-MIA-SJU routing not because it is the best earner. There are other routings that yield a greater sum of TPs and invariably at a better price but because this is a such gentle itinerary. The outbound legs can be accomplished in a single day, albeit with an early start. The inbound is even easier and a noon start is possible, a beneficiary of the westerly routing where the changing time zones work in our favour.

Note, the flights between MIA and SJU are sold as business class and thus accrue 40 Tier points. For those planning a trip from the Midwest or East Coast to San Juan, it is worth considering DFW as a connection point, since DFW and SJU are in excess of 2,000 miles apart.

London Gatwick short haul premium leisure fares
Closer to London, BA's own premium leisure Club Europe fares are not to be sniffed at. Same day hops between Gatwick, Amsterdam, and Jersey are popular by virtue of the absence of Saturday night stay restrictions on many LGW discounted Club Europe fares. AMS sectors typically price out at around £100 per sector (in R class) and at around £90 to/from JER (again in R class)

Pro-active online upgrades (POUG) and airport upgrades offer additional opportunities to squeeze a few extra Tier Points out of deep discount economy BA tickets.

Irregular operations
Irregular operations come part and parcel with air travel. Expect the best but prepare for the worst. In other words, allow plenty of wriggle room in your travel plans, think twice about short connections at MIA during the hurricane season, or at JFK in winter, or at ORD at any time other than spring and fall, noting Chicago's spring and fall seasons while lasting no more than a week each Mother Nature is inclined to blast Chicagoland with her wrath during these short seasons.

Although AA tend to be very helpful rearranging flights, they do often work on the basis of getting you onto the next available service irrespective of fare class. So, for example, If you face a weather related delay they are particularly unwilling to more than that. However if you look at Expert Flyer before approaching the Admirals Club agent then you can be proactive in making suggestions. Note, in rebooking AA flights, there is a risk of instant upgrades ending up as business or worse, economy. If the next available flight is sold out in first, AA are often open to requests for a seat on the following flight that has seats available in first class. This may involve joining the stand-by list. Working with Gate Agents or AAdmirals Club staff pays dividends. It pays to check revised booking class(es) with the agent. This is your only opportunity to ensure the flights are rebooked into the same class as your original booking (A and/or P), and your Tier Points post as planned.

Arrow Working with ticket rules

What are the rules and restrictions?
Cancellation penalties and stopover fees change from fare to fare and from country to country, although stopovers are usually Euro 200 each-way if you break your journey in London for > 24 hours. Also remember you need to factor in the cost of getting to your point of departure, and potentially the cost of a hotel if you are travelling too far to return in a day (e.g. Cyprus, Athens). whichbudget.com lists budget airlines flying to all major cities, and www.skyscanner.net may also be useful.

In general, you will see the rules are much more flexible for the equivalent fare bucket ex-UK.
First fares:
  • Unlimited free changes
  • Unlimited free stopovers*
  • No cancellation penalty
  • Return within 12 months

Club World fares
Again, taking the recent ex-AMS I7SALE fares, the rules are:
  • Changes charged at €300 each
  • Stopovers not permitted
  • Cancellation penalty - net fare plus carrier imposed charges
  • Return within 12 months

*A stopover is a transit of an intermediate point that exceeds 24hrs.
A neat trick for the Club fares – if you time your arrival into London and the departure of your long haul segment right, you can essentially have a free nightstop in London without having an 'official' stopover. For example, you arrive from AMS on a Monday at 21:15 and you can then book your long haul flight the next day (Tuesday) at any time up to 21:14 (< 24hrs) and it is NOT charged as a stopover. Book it for 21:15 or later and that'll be much more expensive fare please. Similarly, you can introduce overnight stays at intermediate connecting cities so long as your connections remain under 24 hours.

Note: BA seem to have clamped down on stopover rules, potentially in light of more widespread use of ex-EU fares. Check your fare rules carefully as lots of fares now limit you to a month’s stopover in the UK at most in either direction.

Arrow Using Google Flights and ITA Matrix

Google Flights and ITA Matrix are fantastic online tools for searching flights and general travel planning. Google Flights has a very user friendly interface that allows you to build relatively simple itineraries and even switch flights (and even destinations) on the fly - the tool keeps up you and adjusts fares on the fly. ITA Matrix (also powered by Google) is a different beast. It is much more torque and includes advanced settings not offered by Google Flights, such as the ability to construct complex, multi-sector itineraries with variable origins and/or destinations. It also displays detailed fare rules.

Please note: neither Google Flights or ITA Matrix can be used to book tickets

Let’s walk through each tool, step by step beginning with Google Flights

Using Google Flights
Go to https://www.google.co.uk/flights/

Step 1: Searching for flights and fares
Enter your origin and destination; select your preferred class of travel; and change the “Airline” filter, selecting oneworld. A calendar will appear and populate each date with the lowest available fare, updating as you add your inbound date, change class of travel, and apply the airline filter. The example below replicates the amazing business class deal unearthed by Cymro, here. The routing is Stockholm to Bangkok via Doha.

Step 2: Review route suggestions.
Google Flights will generate about half a dozen suggestions for both the outbound and inbound journey. You can also explore alternative destinations by clicking on the map located in the right hand margin:

Step 3: Check alternative destinations
By clicking the map, it expands to present alternative destinations. This map makes it tremendously easy to scan for cheaper destinations. As you can see, Cymro has certainly done his homework as BKK is indeed the cheapest oneworld destination in the region. Hanoi at £1,156 does sound very tempting though!

Step 4: Review flights
This step returns us to a review of the destination originally selected, and lists out outbound and inbound flights for review. If you don’t like the aircraft or prefer a shorter or longer connection, just return to step 2. Its easy to do and Google Flights updates immediately.

Step 5: Review suggested booking channels
Simply scroll down the page to review suggested booking channels

I tend to use Google Flights for inspiration, to get a flavour of what routes currently offer the best value, then move on to ITA Matrix to check fare details

Using ITA Matrix
Following the steps below (idiot-proofed by FTers for some years now!) to find the cheapest starting point for your trip.

(1) Go to http://matrix.itasoftware.com

(2) Complete "From" as
AMS;ARN;ATH;BRU;BUD;CAI;CPH;FRA;HEL;IST;LCA;LIN;LI S;PAR;VIE;WAW :: BA+
For completeness, you may want to do a second search on the rest of the EU and potential EU member states:
DUB;DUS;HAM;LUX;MAD;OSL;OTP;PRG;RTM;SOF;ZAG :: BA+
Do also bear in mind that some of the airports there are quite far way from London (e.g. ATH, CAI, IST, HEL) and you may not want to have the hassle of such a long flight to begin your journey. If so, you can come up with your own list based on the above with airports (or others) that suit you best personally.
(3) Complete "To" as:
YYY :: BA+

Where YYY is your destination - if you don't know the airport code, you can use FlyerTalk's own Airport Code Look-up tool
(4) Enter rough dates which suit you and LON as "sales city" to get GBP prices

(5) Click "More Options", change cabin to "Business" or "First" and uncheck "Check seat availability"
This will bring up the cheapest listed fare for the route on that day, although it does not necessarily mean that tickets will still be available at that price. You can use dnw's method below to find days with actual I (Club) or A (First) availability. You can also use a tool such as www.expertflyer.com or KVS, though these are not free.

If you're looking for WT+ pricing (e.g. to Upgrade Using Avios), set the cabin as "Cheapest" and add " / F BC=T" to the "From" and "To" lines. The results will say "Coach", but it will be a WT+ T class fare. You will need to delete a couple of cities from the list to fit in the extra bit of text.

When comparing WT+ prices for potential UuAs, don't forget that the cost of UuAs vary depending on the individual flight distance. You should factor in the worth of the extra Avios needed when considering which fare offers best value.
(6) Click "Go". Scroll down the results if you don't fancy the first options (usually TIP/CAI/IST) or just delete them in the first place.

Refine, rinse, and repeat as necessary
Note that you may need to click on 'Cost' to reorder your results in price order, as the default is to list CAI flights first as they offer Club and First on all legs, not just the longhaul one. If searching for First flights, be careful as it sometimes lists itineraries where only one longhaul leg is in F and the return is in J.

Now that you know what the cheapest fare is, you need to find days on which it is available. In order to get a special fare you need availability in the following booking classes on your required flights. Again, taking AMS as an example:

AMS-LHR segment R-class (sometimes D on First fares but we'll say R to be safe)
LHR-<DEST>R-class for Club, A-class for First

You can use expertflyer.com to check availability by I/A code. Once you have found the right flights you can put them in to the ba.com site with your departure location set as Netherlands and it should price it up perfectly. Also note that the ‘feeder’ flights more regularly tend to book in J class now – this is better since J is nearly always available, meaning less ‘hunting’ for availability on your part.

Working example
So, let's put this into practice using the ITA Matrix to search for the cheapest flights between AMS, BRU, and CDG as potential origins and LAX/HNL as potential destinations.

Step 1: Searching for flights and fares

Note: adding "/alliance oneworld" in the advanced routing boxes makes the search quicker and limits the results to oneworld carriers only

Step 2: Reviewing the calendar results

Step 3: Choosing your flights

Note: using the "Time bars" option allows you to view more options at the same time.

Step 4: Reviewing the itinerary details and fare construction

Step 5: Reviewing the fare rules

Step 6: Booking your flights
As you cannot actually book flights with the ITA Matrix, you will need to go to your preferred booking channel to complete the process, for example BA.com and AA.com. It is worth checking both as AA.com occasionally files cheaper fares under its own code that are less expensive than the equivalent BA coded routing priced on BA.com

Great work thanks Prospero. Especially looking into the further flung oneworld members such as JJ ^

I notice that the QF graph is missing SYD-DFW, although you did remember that one in the text.

Currently US markets their Canadian/Caribbean routes as First, but that will surely change soon.

I am going to be the first person to put a request for TP run help here...

I need to get 410tp's to get to gold and only have one weekend to do it which is 10/11th Jan.
What is the cheapest way to get 410tp's in 1 weekend?
So far best I've found is LGW-JER return and JER-HEL return for ~£500, which gets me 320TP's.

Perhaps we should just answer 'Honolulu' as the answer to any TP run related question

For 410 TPs I'd look at a CWLCY return. LCY-JFK-LCY would get you 420 TPs and you could spend some time in New York.

Doubt that's the cheapest option, particularly at such short notice (if you have time see if it's cheaper by starting at DUB).

All the other options in that timescale seem too much hassle as most shorthaul CE gets you only 40 TP and the longer ones (like HEL) get 80 but take up more time.

You'd have to spend a lot of time hopping around Europe whereas a trip to New York would get the points more easily.

Note: I don't think CWLCY operates on a Saturday so you'd need to fly on Friday, but I don't think any other options would not require taking some time off work.

How about 360 TP for £1,239?

BCN - DXB with a Saturday night stopover of three hours, i.e., a same-plane turnaround and lots of sleeping on the plane.

You'd have to do a connecting flight out on the Friday night beforehand (10TP) and you'd have plenty of time to fly back from Barcelona in CE (40TP).

ETA: MXP and OSL are cheaper, but not massively so.

QR can do CPH - DXB for £1,358 in J on the CPH - DOH leg and in A on DOH-DXB for a total of 400TP, excluding positioning.

Or you could do a same-evening turnaround to AMS or DUB without giving up a weekend, add that to the existing booking, and/or nest an AY business fare within your HEL visit for the remaining 80 TP, with a domestic one-way and a road trip back at some other time.
