I've no doubt BA introduced this change due to the relative ease to achieve GGL for those that comfortably achieve Gold and have a little bit of time and a bit of spare cash.
Lol, yes, I have been on an emotional rollercoster. If I was to describe my emotional progress over the last hour I would say:

Just HOW many GGL's are there that someone in BA had to cry enough? Just curious

Oh, how kind

Just to add, not surprised at the change, and next year I may well be the wrong side of it, however still view it as broadly positive for BA and those people that fly enough to meet the criteria.

I am trying to take a helicopter vision on this, my take is:

1) They presumably are seeing some new GGLer prospects sliding it at just over 3k and this is either increasing numbers too much (impact on jokers) and/or they actually aren't the profile of GGLers they are looking for - not the true high rollers.

2) They are happy with their existing GGL membership cohort, so no changes to affect them, other than the historic Euro-Cheat level. Perhaps this is because any changes to the 3k barrier risks annoying some people they would rather not annoy and it's not worth the candle trying to divide and rule, to mix my metaphors.

3) On the other hand they do see anyone getting 5k as an interesting prospect and want to keep encouraging them.

So glad I didn't book BA the other day that would have got me over 3k Tier Points - saving money and choosing another carrier. Seriously that 2 x 3K qualification to GGL was a real incentive to me until I read this post.

Very disappointing all in all.

Even with 5k TPs GGL is still quite easy to get for longhaul flyers. One F return a month or three CW returns every two months will do it.

For shorthaul flyers on the other hand things become more difficult as qualification moves from just over three returns per month to more than five.

Maybe BA's rationale is that they want GGL passengers to contribute to the longhaul network.

I guess this was to be expected given the ease with which GGL can be achieved with some of the extreme TP runs.
I think BA need to look at the Tier points awarded on some of their flights e.g. the BabyBus anomaly needs to be sorted out as this would help in whittling out the GGL riff raff who fly from LCY. There is no real justification for 210 TP for this route.

I am surprised there is no requirement to earn a certain amount of TP's on 'BA eligible' flights.

Last year I had a mix of BA and *A, but I got so fed up with LH going the way of 4U that I decided to put pretty much all ex-UK travel on BA this year (having finished last year with ca 2,800 TPs and *A Gold). With a shift to all-BA 5,000 is doable, but I really should have gone for 3,000+ last year, as I can see April coming around with me stuck at 4,500 and doing a pointless trip somewhere just to break it. Oh well, no use crying over spilled milk.

This, and/or a minimum 'spend' on BA. That would be a lot smarter, in my view, than sending money into AA's coffers from some TP running.

Gotta say, this one doesn't hurt my feelings. I've had a sense of GGL service levels and accommodations slipping lately. Hopefully this will reverse that trend. Now, time to add the escorts & tarmac transfers please.

Yep. Was just about to suggest that myself.

GGL, to me, is really about loyalty to BA.

The TP count for GGL could be based on or weighted to TPs earned on "BA metal" (for some definition of that), which would potentially deal with the issue of US Transcon TP running.

However that would involve a further TP odometer to be built into the EC machinery, and the concept of which flights are eligible.

Given the sloth-like pace that other BA software tools appear (at least to the outsider) to be changed or developed, this would likely not be possible.

I for one think this is a great change. Everyone and his dog can get a GGL card these days and I don't think that was the original intention of this "exclusive" tier.

Now can you please lift the qualification requirements for GCH/SCH and scrape Bronze?
