German lesson needed?
noticed the below German on a flight this week (think it was on a 320 with the 3x3 slim seats but not the new leather ones).
not sure if that is an ex BMI one (and thus came from LH?).
That German doesn't make sense. "Offen" (with Umlaut" isn't even a word. "Offnen" (with Umlaut) means Open so that would make sense ("Open in Emergency").
One would have thought that they'd have someone checking signs for being correct?

Otherwise it should read Öffnen Sie im Notfall. But then the English would have to read "Open in an emergency".
I think someone just did "Google English>German". I see things like this all of the time with other languages and English. The German word for "open" (adjective) is offen; but without the umlaut. So I have no idea what they were thinking.

exactly - Offen (with Umlaut) isn't a german word.....

Google translate says it means "openable in an emergency", and searching for that specific phrase in google brings up German websites that have spelt it that way.
Are you sure it's not just an unusual phrasing as opposed to being "wrong"?

But if you translate "openable in an emergency" then google says öffenbaren im Notfall.

No, because the word "opening" is not intended to be read as a noun in the English text.
The text should be considered "Opening the door is done like this" rather than "this is an emergency opening through which you should escape".
