Circle mapper vs distance

Hi Everyone,

(I tried to search for the answer before posting but could not find anything. I apologize in advance if this has already been covered...)

To see the range of Tier 1 Avios redemptions from LAX, I use Great Circle Mapper to draw a circle at 649nm@LAX.

ABQ falls within this circle.

However, LAX-ABQ is a Tier 2 Avios redemption and when I check the actual flight distance between LAX and ABQ, it's 677 mi.

Can someone explain what I am doing wrong or why this discrepancy occurs?

Thanks!

Redemption bands are in miles not nautical miles. You need to enter 649mi@LAX into gcmap. LAX-ABQ is 677mi so in band 2.

BA does put some routes in a higher or lower band for their own redemptions. See: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/briti...ing-bands.html

Great Circle Mapper is not to scale.

Was wondering the same thing….

Great Circle length calculation is a simple equation based on latitude and longitude, and is based on surface travel at 0 metres altitude. The map is just for show….

Thought that BA etc used the average flight plan miles to set tier thresholds (works in their favour) as opposed to great circle and therefore shorter distance?
