Following the excellent POUG thread (Pro-active Online Upgrade (POUG) tracking and discussion 2016 thread) this wikipost is all about fixed price AUP (airport upgrades). AUPs are either offered at check-in at the airport, or (less regularly) in the lounge at the airport upon request. More specifics at the end of this wiki, see below.

How to get a AUP
They are only available on the day of travel from the airport. You cannot ring up for them or arrange it in advance. It is subject to availability of both seats and facilities at the airport concerned.

LHR: If you have lounge access probably the best place to find out in this situation is Galleries Club South lounge, at the customer service desk on the left on entry. (T3 GC equivalent is on the right just past the entrance). It needs a ticket agent, who wear blue name badges, and there is always one on duty there. Sometimes the Flounge / CCR customer service agents are ticketing agents, but that's luck of the draw.

For LGW ask the ticket office at the transit / glass end of zone C. For LCY ask at the customer service desk on the left in the main hall. For most practical purposes, you can't get an AUP once landside in LGW or LCY.

Otherwise you can ask at check-in, they can find out whether it is available and send you to someone else for the ticketing aspects. In T5 you can also check at Zone E since again there is always a ticketing agent on duty there.

For domestic terminals you can also ask at checkin, GLA, EDI and MAN have particular desks for this. For non UK locations, ask at the ticket desk where one exisits, but in many locations there isn't one and you need to ask at the check-in counter. At some locations there is neither a ticket desk nor qualified agents, particularly in Europe, so effectively no AUP is offered at this location. At some locations (YYZ, IAD, JFK) they can be arranged from the lounge.

Someone in the First lounge at LHR was going through the motions of upgrading to CW to F (BA295) for £599 a little while ago.

Do they not offer upgrades openly anymore? I've previously seen signs at MAN offering WT-WT+ for £179 or whatever yet nothing at LHR.
You would think that with some advertising, people may pay the upgrade price rather than checking in online to see it or having some knowledge of it which would surely be in Ba's best interests (on occasion).

I've had zero offers online for any of my European and transatlantic flights (except for JER).

Just asked in First lounge about upgrade from CW to First on BA117 this morning. Was offered £599. Accepted and 1K blocked off. Told to go upstairs to pay which I did immediately, only to be told that only full fare upgrade available...bit of u turn in the space of 5 mins...

The sign at PVG checkin desks explains that AUPs may be offered based on seat availability (well duh!) ticket type and previous acceptance of promotional upgrades.

I'd seen the discussion on here about previous take up, but I hadn't noticed any comments about it being based on ticket type before.

Flew from WAW and asked at check in about an upgrade, the agent said there were seats so called MNG? who said if still available at the gate we would be upgraded and have a new BP. Got to gate no beep, the MNG was there and I asked if CE was full, "Yes"! So we boarded and I asked the CSD if the flight was completely full, "Yes" . Later was speaking to crew who went and checked and there were 4 seats in CE empty. Why do they have to lie, just say no, you cannot upgrade?

Just to clarify, did you ask for a "paid upgrade" or an "upgrade promotion"? If the staff thought you were asking for a general purpose upgrade (ie. free) then I can understand the reaction. Normally if you ask a paid upgrade then they need your credit card pronto, so "if available at the gate" doesn't quite fit in to what I believe to be the normal way of working. Also due to crew staffing restrictions, it wouldn't be unusual to have empty seats in CE and still to be "full".

You have no proof that anyone lied to you. What if some people simply did not turn up, or change to another flight at late notice?

But if someone is asking for a free upgrade (it sounds like you were), I think BA staff should be able to say anything to move that person along. As you say, the ideal response is "no" but sometimes people don't accept that, or hear something else even when they are being told no.

Did the checkin agent really say that you would be upgraded (for free) if there were spaces? That is definitely against BA policy and contradicts the experience of (almost?) everyone who posts to this board.

Elsewhere I have heard " sorry sir, unfortunately we cannot give you an upgrade due to policy."
At a busy metro airport yes, they may take an easy way out and pass the buck to" please check at the gate".

"Please check at the gate" is one thing, and is an understandable (if cop-out) approach to getting rid of a pushy passenger. But "If there's empty seats, you'll get updated at the gate" is a completely different message, and the one purportedly given here.

I do suspect that sometimes the former is the message given, but the latter is what is heard.

I asked if there was availability in CE, the check in guy called his manager and after looing at the screen for an eternity he said "if there is still availability at the gate we will issue you a new boarding pass and seat number", so I didn't bother about asking to pay as I assumed if available we would get it.
Thanks for your response.
