  • BA issued tickets (can include other carriers) ^
  • TA issued (on BA stock) booking with only BA flights ^
  • TA issued (on BA stock) booking with other carriers

  • Some TP runs can be booked online at aa.com. Be sure to use the Sort by schedule option in order to locate the exact flights you found on the ITA Matrix tool.

Karfa - you narrowed it down now, very good - thank you.

Seeing as I will already have 160TP's lined up for post Nov 8, your suggestion here seems ideal:
£1583 to OGG or HNL - Including BA1 out and BA2 back, US flights JFK-PHX-HNL/OGG, gets 1340 TPs - £1.18/TP

Is that still CPH-HEL-LHR first I assume? Then LCY - BA1 etc and obviously taking a one way cheapy to CPH to begin?

What then is the shortest time frame that could be done in? (Taking the Sunday into account?)

Is it possible to call BA and ask them to book this - if so what 'codes' do I give them?
Do you know the specific 'string' to put into the Matrix?

Thanks again

It might be worth our while creating a Matrix master thread / tutorial.

Unfortunately I am somewhat suspicious that the Matrix will not be with us for much longer.

A tutorial of any kind that can show me where I'm going wrong would be greatly appreciated. It took me long enough for the penny to drop about the WT+ upgrade with Avios to CW (granted most of that was trying to get my head around the abbreviations) so this TP run magic is just a blur right now

Thanks for the welcome, everything I've read so far proves how friendly and accommodating of newbies you all are

Here is one way to at least get you started:

In "Departing from" put CPH :: HEL LON BA1-4 JFK PHX
In "Destination" put OGG :: PHX JFK BA1-4 LON HEL

The double colons ("::") will do the work of putting the routing options into the "Advanced Routing Codes " fields

This basically means fly from CPH then to HEL then to LON (covers all London airports) then on one of BA1,2,3,4 to JFK then to PHX then to OGG. Similar for the reverse. Use the calendar option and start with a date in the allowed ranges (see post by KARFA).

Once it brings up some flights you will have the flight numbers and booking (fare) codes to tell the agent when you call up to book.

Try
From: CPH :: AY,BA HEL AY,BA LON BA1,IB4601,AY5401,AA6229,US7408,BA3,IB4685,AY5403, AA6231,US7409 JFK US,AA PHX US,AA

Use the calendar search and see how it goes.
NB, if you get "Unable to process your request", try again!

No, that one doesn't include going via HEL either on the outbound or inbound. One way to do it is a return from CPH, and OGG or HNL as a destination. Use routing codes

outbound: LON BA1-4 JFK PHX / alliance oneworld
inbound: PHX JFK BA1-4 LON / alliance oneworld

Select business class or higher, sales city London, maybe try 4 nights and see what that brings up when searching on calendar of fares.

I suspect 5 days in total.
  • CPH-LHR on day 1 (and get to CPH before that flight of course),
  • day 2 pick up BA1 in the morning from LCY then you can overnight at JFK or PHX,
  • day 3 get to HNL/OGG (lets pretend this is a saturday)
  • day 3 (still!) get a late flight back from HNL landing at PHX in the early morning of day 4
  • day 4 flight PHX-JFK arriving late afternoon/early evening and connect on to BA2 or BA4
  • day 5 arrive lcy, get over to LHR, get flight to CPH, get flight back to LHR if you can do a back-to-back

When you have got it priced up you can call BA and just read out the dates & flight number to book. Make sure your USA domestic flights are under the US/AA flight number and in A class so they each get 210 TPs.

As much as that price is appealing - I've seen 1 way fares on BA1 costing more that £1500 - I'm not sure a 5 day transatlantic jaunt would be right for a first time run! Could you point me in the right direction for using matrix voodoo for JER-LGW-MLA-LGW-JER. I'm hoping for something achievable in a weekend...

For the AMS-JER run you can buy two returns over two days . One would be AMS- JER and the other JER-AMS. You then nest the tickets such that you can get on the return flight from JER to AMS within 180mins.

There was a blog on it previously somewhere

So if you were trying to do a TP run in CE to say JER, AMS, or anywhere else you will find the one way CE fare is much higher than 50% of the return fare. As turnaround is invariably less than MCT, the only options are to book a return on the next rotation back and sit it out at the airport - with AMS or JER at least the next flight is usually 3/4 hours away so not too bad. Alternatively you can nest tickets so you get a ticket which is LGW-JER-LGW (Tckt.A) and another which is JER-LGW-JER (Tckt.B). You then work the dates and flights so you can get back on the same plane as between the two tickets you have two LGW-JER legs and two JER-LGW legs. No more problem with MCT and you can now do back-to-backs (both JER and AMS Are very easy for this) but it does involve having to do the TP run on two different dates.

Day 1 - LGW-JER (Tckt.A) then JER-LGW (Tckt.B)
Day 2 - LGW-JER (Tckt.B) then JER-LGW (Tckt.A)

With domestic or euro traveller fares the one way is typically 50% of the return so booking two one ways shouldn't be more expensive.

EDIT: and just to add you can always do something more adventurous and do a nest in a nest in a nest as I reported here http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/briti...-140.html#2090

GinFizz, Calchas, Karfa, much more specific information there thank you! Will try those suggestions. Still, it seems, whilst short hops can add up the TP's as well, if I just want to buy / run to Gold (with OK the pain of living in the air of 5-7 days) that the quickest and cheapest way to do it is still the exEu - USA route - which I am up for…Say £2000 ish all in. I just have to understand this Matrix business (or pay someone to do it as I offered) and somehow get it booked! Really good to see so many people are willing to share their knowledge on here - this FT rocks or flys or something...

So I did this and the cheapest I got was £395, which is neither:

£1.33/TP | £319 | 240TPs | JER-LGW-MLA-LGW-JER | J/R/R/J |

nor

£1.96/TP | £471 | 240TPs | JER-LGW-MLA-LGW-JER | I/I/I/I |

and the itinerary is J/R/I/J

I am therefore assuming that there is no R class on the MLA to LGW leg, therefore accounting for the £76 price increase over the first itinerary, but represents the best price available on these dates whereas the wiki listed itinerary at £319 is the best price available in the correct circumstances (flight sale, for example).

Would my assumptions be correct here?
