Hi everyone,

First post after lurking on this forum for several years, and it’s to request some help in piecing together a TP run disguised as a holiday (or should that be the other way around?).

My wife and I are thinking of a holiday to Hawaii next year (probably September 2015). I’d like to see if we could each get to BA Silver as a result of the trip for a reasonable sum of money on top of what it costs anyway to get there.

It will probably be our only long haul trip next year so I can’t count on getting more than a handful of TPs from trips around Europe.

I’m not an ITA matrix pro but have been looking on Google’s flight search engine for trips starting around Europe . Dublin seems the cheapest place to start from, but even so the prices for either September this year or March next year (obviously Sep 2015 not yet available to book) are coming in at £2k for business, as opposed to £770 in economy.

Tickets to HNL or LAX would be fine. I have enough Avios to get from LAX to HNL if we can get enough TPs to LAX.

I’ve read on this thread people getting tickets for more like £1500 for an ex-EU HNL trip. Are there time periods when these kind of fares are available, or have fares increased recently on a permanent basis?

Many thanks in advance for any advice!

Have been struggling with ITA matrix, and hoping for some explanation.

I have to do a trip to Singapore in October, and would like to use it to maximise tier points. Would like cost about £2,500 or below, leaving EDI or GLA. I only need to be in Singapore one day, so arrive Wed, overnight, stay Thu, leave Friday (or midnight / v.late flight of Thu or Fri morning).

So far best option I could see is EDI-LHR-DOH-SIN-DOH-LHR-EDI all in Business-I class, for £2,200 or thereabouts. First question is whether there is a better option, and secondly, if so, how do I find it using ITA? I've been playing with all the codes, but it looks like shooting in the dark (try something, see how are fares, try something else). I think I haven't got my head around the logic of it yet!

Thanks for any advice

EDIT: I've lurked on this forum for so long I thought I must have posted before, but just noticed this is my first post! So I should also add my hello, and a HUGE thanks to everyone for the great info I've enjoyed reading :-)

Hi Chillcoat,

Welcome to the BA board. It's nice to have you here. Hopefully you'll pick up lots of useful tips and, in time, contribute some of your own.

The Hawaii route is a great one for maximising tier points. In fact, rather than just silver, you could both get pretty close to gold if you work out your routing correctly! I'm actually flying to Maui this weekend, ex-AMS, using a route deal I found in a sale in April, picking up 1,200 tier points for just £1,331 in business and US domestic First. I know some others spent a little more, routing out via Helsinki for around £1,500 for 1,500 points, so straight to Gold. If you plan it right you can include a weekend in Europe at the start of your trip to kick things off, or just fly out and back on the same day. There are regular sales from various European countries, with the best for Hawaii often being Amsterdam, Brussels, Luxembourg and Stockholm. Keep an eye on this thread for details and don't worry about booking for next year just yet. You have plenty of time

My bad.

as Filthy Monkey has said, there are some good runs to HNL possible (I am doing one earning 1,270 for £1,450 ish later in the year).

Those ex EU (I7 / I8 fare codes) sales are typically at similar times to ex UK sales - though often longer and more frequent.

Given you have plenty of time, I would stick around and wait - you should easily save £500 and get something ex EU for £1,500 to Hawaii and again, as has been said, 1,000 plus TPs is easily achievable even without a HEL routing (e.g. AMS - LON - MIA - LAX - HNL).

welcome to FT, the BAEC Forum and in particular this thread btw!

Welcome Moadib, welcome to Flyertalk, the BA Forum and this mini Forum! Please continue to contribute here, it's great when new people join us. Particularly as you are a long term lurker!

Now RJ is often a good one if you are prepared to stopover in BKK, go as far as HKG and down again. Or the Dragonair services from India. It's difficult to see why Matrix isn't coming up with a better option, but the first thing to try is the 500 mile radius for starting point for EDI, in other words being prepared to do a connecting flight from EDI before starting your journey. Forcing an EDI-LHR routing may wipe out a series of non combinable fares.

Probably best if you do a screen shot and show it here. Then you can get better advice.

Just found out my outbound DUB-JFK-LAS on AA on the 8th October cancelled and re-routed DUB-ORD-LAS (ORD-LAS < 2000 miles)

Q's:

i) Will I get the tier points for the original routing?
ii) If yes, is there a chance they would rebook me LHR or LGW-LAS direct if I ask? I'm based in NCL and was doing a positioning flight to DUB.

Thanks

Bombo

re i): mixed experience. unfortunately probably unlikely as they are AA flights and you are looking for BA credit. If you were crediting AA, I believe they are better with ORC but less so with other FF programmes. Is the ticket issued by BA (125) or AA?

ii) nothing to loose in asking.

Thanks for the response. I booked the ticket over the phone with BA (hope this answers the question!).

Yes that will be on "125 stock". (All of BA's tickets have numbers starting with 125-)

again, not the experienced but that might make your conversation with BA easier.

will leave for others to comment though of whether BA might still insist that essentially AA send them your Original Routing Credit (ORC) (which AA has to 'pay' for) or whether they might apply it discretionally themselves given the changed routing.

I wouldn't get my hopes up that they will - but it might help your conversation around trying to change the routing to one that earns you the TPs you were expecting.

I'm planning exactly the same approach as you, and I convinced my wife without too many problems. Convincing her to go HBO to Hawaii for 3 weeks was more of a challenge, but my wife is (perhaps) more compliant than most!
Oh YES??? Some explaining to do when you get home.

As a hypnotist, I would recommend avoiding that approach (unless you REALLY know what you're doing)

I was going to suggest asking to be re-routed DUB-PHL-LAS. This would get the required tier points.

On checking, DUB-PHL doesn't operate on that day either.

So, AA DUB-JFK and US DUB-PHL operate daily except Wednesdays in October. Unusual, and unlucky for you.

Re-routing via London may require extra taxes to be paid.

From one girl to another, you probably could do Hawaii HBO, cram whatever you need into yours, overspill into his and carry on the lighter one
