Destinations in CAPITALS on departure boards?

I was in T5 this morning and on the departure boards there were two flights whose destinations were in capitals. One was Bologna, the other Stavanger. Any ideas why? They both were showing on time, both BA as far as I could tell. Had someone just got a little overexcited with the caps lock?

I suspect that would be the most likely answer.

It can't be because the destinations are worth shouting about, I've been to Stavanger and its not all that exciting

I have spotted this too and I think these are BA routes that have started from LHR since T5 opened. I may just be imagining it though. It doesn't explain what is going on with the caps lock though.

New destinations which have similar looking names as other places?

I noticed this and found it odd. Maybe the people input new(ish) destinations use caps to make them stand out.

CAPITALISED info should be banned (unless displayed on a split-flap Solari board <clack, clack, clack> )

Our brains are very good at recognising and remembering the shape of words. This is almost impossible to do when the text is capitalised. Sorry for the rant. This is a pet peeve of mine.

You're quite correct. I was driving in a relatively unfamiliar part of north London recently and noticed the road sign giving directions was capitalised, which is quite unusual I thought. Certainly, it took me longer to recognise ISLINGTON, THE CITY, CAMDEN TOWN than it would have Islington, The City and Camden Town.

Indeed. The human brain is quite excellent at pattern recognition, hence why many small spelling mistakes, inversion of letters etc are often missed, although out eyes see all this information our brains block as much out as possible. Thought to be a self-preservation mechanism to prevent overstimulation. Epilepsy is an example of when this doesn't quite work.

Completely agree - the worst is people who pin up notices on walls in block capitals in some degree of attempt to convey their message more effectively.

Just means I don't read their message.
