Favourite safety videos. Is it time BA did something a little more snazzy?
'Your safety is our primary concern'. Yes we all know that but it can be conveyed in ways that are a bit less 'stiff upper lip' than the traditional BA ones.
Having been on a few Air New Zealand and Qantas flights in the last couple of weeks, is it not about time BA followed their example and did something a little more exciting?
Here's the current Qantas one. A bit cheesy for my liking.
The hobbit one is dire; it runs for 4 and a half minutes, that is terrible.
if the safety video is important, then it should be treated seriously imo. If it is something to turn into a joke, then should be able to scrap the whole things

It's been nominated for an Oscar though

Not sure I agree. How many people (apart from me!) pay attention to all safety videos? Not that many given my experience on BA flights. Anything that makes it more likely to be watched is a good thing in my opinion provided of course that it conveys the necessary information.

The hobbit is in running for an Oscar, I have seen nothing to suggest that the safety video is
Running a safety video for 4.5 minutes would make me less likely to watch it. 3.25 minutes is long enough for a safety demonstration to be done. 1.25 minutes less attention required
You can't get rid of the existing video! The redhead is a total babe! Makes the camera smoulder
I'm still upset that the second name on the name badge of the CCrew is so blurred though - got it wrong for the quiz
One thing about the hobbit one is that they explain the brace position better IMHO - making the point about not resting your elbows on your knees is good

Frequently changing the safety video, say every 3 months, would make it more likely for more people to watch. I must admit that I am one of those people who does not pay full attention to the BA video, purely because I could recite the video almost word for word. If it was to change, it would make me take notice.
I am not sure what BA could do, but with the introduction of the A380 and 787 into the fleet over the next few years is the ideal enabler to refresh the fleet wide safety videos.

Well OK, provided we can choose from two versions: a fun one (e.g hobbits) for the under-twelves and a straight one (e.g. the current version) for grown-ups.

How about the Air New Zealand body paint version (Bare Essentials) for the grown-ups?

Adding an element of fun to the presentation does not have to take away from the serious nature of the messages contained within it.
Far too few people watch the BA video. I know because I watch it each time and look around at those who are too busy reading their newspapers or doing something else. Those people (the vast majority on BA flights) are hardly 'taking it seriously' are they?

It's not actually about whether the pax take it seriously, it's about whether they listen to it so their subconscious retains it for an emergency. As a result, a fun video which actually encourages people to watch because it is fun seems more likely to do this. And the reason the NZ one is so long is because it is detailed. There's a lot of stuff in there which is good practice and which pax should be told, but which is not normally included.
Loved the bare essentials one as well.
But if safety videos have to be deadly serious, why was the CX one for many years a cartoon involving the pink panther (and the cutest little baby pink panther ever as well). Sadly, youtube doesn't have it

God forbid BA would go down this route. Just keep it straight and simple, no need for all the nonsense, which is all rather puerile IMHO. And the novelty wears off pretty quickly, after which it's decidedly annoying.
