'afternoon tea' WTP JFK-LHR

Hi all

A recent daytime JFK-LHR WTP flight had 'afternoon tea' on the menu (after a good cooked breakfast for the 'main' meal). I warned Mrs Happy not to get too excited, but goodness was it underwhelming. One tiny, horrid muffin. Not even the mini (thin) sarnies.

We left off the flight very hungry TBH. Lack of any real food in the JFK lounges didn't help, and maybe we should have stocked up from the glum main terminal grub offerings beforehand, but I don't remember ever getting off a BA flight this starving before. Were we just unlucky or is this normal?

[everything else was fine and we were in CW on the way out, so this isn't a real moan, just a Q]

JFK-LHR is, iirc, about 6 hours flying time, so even served pretty much at the start of the flight, arrival into London would surely only be about 5 hours after breakfast was served

Sounds right. Lounge food, a full breakfast and the 'afternoon tea' seems like enough for a six hour flight.

Were you actually only served one 'tiny' muffin? I haven't flown that route/class, but it would surprise me if they had a meal service consisting of one tiny muffin.

Yip, the dreaded "Muffin or nuffin" service inbound to LHR from Eastbound US destinations. Crew hate giving them out as no one likes them and it looks embarrassing, we live in hope it will be changed, but not holding our breath.

WTP gets WT catering except that on the (first) main meal the main course from WT is replaced by a main course from CW (on a 'whatever is left' basis). As part of the permanent cost cutting that seems to affect most airlines at the moment, BA has replaced what used to be a second meal, then a second snack by a muffin or equivalent on Eastern North America Westbound routes. I am not sure if West cost flights get more but on Eastern destinations (be it East coast or Midwest) it is the standard offer.

I agree it is ridiculous to label it afternoon tea but suspect it is part of yet another cost cutting strategy which allows the airline to only volunteer tea, coffee or water (and perhaps a few soft drinks?) with that second 'meal' as opposed to a full bar (although I would suspect that any drink would be brought with a smile by the crew if specifically asked).

That's the bit that surprised me. It really was one muffin. Doesn't really seem like a meal meriting its own section on the WTP menu.

And yes to Dave Noble, it was 6 ish hours flight, but by the time we got off the aircraft, cleared inbound LHR customs/UKBA etc, and could get to a cafe at LHR, it was 7 hours since breakfast. No biggie, as I say, just wondered if the muffin was usual.

I am suprised that they call it afternoon tea rather than just a snack but 1 meal does seem adequate for a 6 hour flight to me.

I would have thought that it wouldnt take more than 1 hour to clear immigration in London which would give opportunity to eat again about 6 hours after breakfast if needed and leaving "starving" after 5 hours does seem unlikely for most people

Wow. I would think BA could do better than that. Actually, it would be hard for BA to do worse than just a muffin.

I have to agree with many of your points.

Iv not had the muffin or nuffin meal as yet but it seems quite pathetic, I also think that WT+ should have a seperate meal to WT for the second meal, but i also think that the muffin should be removed and replaced in WT, from what iv read it seems pretty rubbish.

Its nice to read that the cooked main for breakfast was good.

Again however I have to agree with your comments on the food offering in the Galleries at JFK, I wasnt all that impressed when i was there just over a year ago, luckily we got access to pre flight dining which was great, but a few sarnies and some pre packed cheese and crisps etc isnt really brilliant and doesnt come close to the standard thats needed for the volume of flights that BA/OW send through JFK.

Not correct im afraid. As far as im aware WT+ gets the main meal main catered seperate to CW.

And why does it have to be a muffin?

A packet of Walkers shortbread or fruit cake would be more British.

Not true at all. It's a CW style meal, and not from CW loads.

From BA's website:

"On flights into and out of London Heathrow and London Gatwick, your choice of main course comes from the business class Club World menu . . ."

I hate that 'muffin'. Truly terrible. I just eat the yoghurt they give as well as the smoothie with a cup of tea.

At least on Westbound services arriving into the US (not sure if all flights to the US get the same catering or not?) you get some decent sandwiches for the 2nd meal.

Correct

but.......... its not from what is loaded for CW. WT+ catering is loaded just for WT+ and not taken from left overs from the CW cabin.

It's the same length as a US west to east coast flight and vice versa. Tons of people do the red eye and go straight to work. There is zero expectation on food quantity or quality. You get nothing. Whereas on BA people feel because they cross the atlantic it is a looong haul. Getting to the canaries from UK is just as long. Those sort of flights have lower expectations. You get what you pay for ultimately. Ever flown a US carrier to Europe?? Head down and go to sleep territory
