For Matrix newbies such as myself, that query contains a Matrix feature not documented in the help section of their site: forcing a fare basis code (e.g. I7SALE) using f. Its use is described in more detail on the FT topic below:

TIP: How to specify the fare basis code on ITA.

That is a really useful entry for ITA Thank you.

Now all we need is a full list of ex EU fare basis codes.

I can't book a trip to HNL till feb 1st so miss out on these deals but can't seem to get ITA t price at anytging but them as that is clearly the cheapest option. I expect that with the fare codes this would be possible/

That varies, but I7SALE is pretty common throughout europe right now, on AA, BA and IB.

Q: Are you allowed wildcards? ...or, dare I suggest it, regular expressions?

I[0-9]SALE ...

apologies as i must be thick too, when i try this it routes bru-lhr-lax-hnl

at the right price, but all other routes are a lot more expensive. am i missing something? the routing of lhr direct to lax means missing tp's right?

EDIT: ok a slightly different approach seems to have it, using multi city tool but jumping destinations, so entering bru-mia, then mia-hnl as flight 2, seems to return something like what you have.

You'll need to use Multi City to get the most out of the routing, but the poster was stating he couldn't see the fares at all, so that was the simplest way to get them to price. You can then play with routings to your heart's content once you know the fare is valid for your dates.

cheers Wozza, I see what you mean. New to this so just getting to grips with the finer points.

One more question if you don't mind, How do i check the fare/dates as you mention?

Many thanks for your help.

Well I can't find any I[0-68-9]SALE fares from europe at the moment. There are several other sale fares though, e.g. (euro-ish)
Code:
I7SALE BLQ EWR 1653.64 - reference
INCEUR1 BUD CPT 2154.59
INCGOBA BLQ PEK 1803.02
INE5G7Q5 LGW SKB 2377.15
INE7A0Q1 NAP SKB 1625.1
IOFERTAS AGP MCO 2065.94
IR5M6J NAP MLM 2154.69
IRCRTDE SZG JFK 2201.82
That NAP-SKB is pretty good. Allows a stopover too.

Thanks for sharing them! I note that SZG is the 2nd worst fare after LGW. Italy seems to get all the good ones* ... again!

SZG is just over an hour away. NAP is ... err ... a 9h drive. Angatol, are you actually setting these fares, as well as finding them and posting them here?!

* I'm exaggerating, but only slightly

They're not in any order, those fares. Here's the order from my most recent run:
Code:
1605.42 FLR YYZ I7SALE RMATCH
1625.1 NAP SKB INE7A0Q1 RMATCH
1653.64 BLQ EWR I7SALE RMATCH
1803.02 BLQ PEK INCGOBA RMATCH
1875.43 FLR UVF INE7A0Q1 RMATCH
1882.14 VCE DEN I7SALE RMATCH
1946.61 PRG JFK I7SALE RMATCH
2061.13 GOT POS INE7A0Q1 RMATCH
2065.94 AGP MCO IOFERTAS RMATCH
2085.16 ARN POS INE7A0Q1 RMATCH
2101.38 PSA GRU INE7A0Q1 RMATCH
2154.59 BUD CPT INCEUR1 RMATCH
2154.69 NAP MLM IR5M6J RMATCH
2181.6 FRA CPT INCGOBA RMATCH
2201.82 SZG JFK IRCRTDE RMATCH
2266.29 HEL SJU I7SALE RMATCH
2329.54 CPH DEN I7SALE RMATCH
2329.84 CPH DEN I7SALE RMATCH
2330.07 LIN DUR INCGOBA RMATCH
2333.28 VIE CPT INCGOBA RMATCH
It's not all that useful ordering by price, should order by cpm or something.
The above is random airports in europe to random airports elsewhere in the world more than 4000 miles away.

RMATCH means the fare rules contain the text "VALID FOR TRAVEL COMMENCING" meaning it's likely to be a sale fare.

Easiest way is to put a RT search into ITA but instead of exact dates search across a whole 30 day period.

If you book a J fare which involves a US domestic connection on AA metal them BA.com will book you on the BA codeshare and sometimes this books into I even if it is a 2-class plane. Business doesn't exist on these aircraft, it's Economy or First, but BA will give you Business TPs not First TPs if you get booked into I, even though you're flying First*

However, AA(.com) will book you into A using the AA code on the very itinerary, often for the very same price, and this definitely gets you more TPs!

Try this out on e.g. LHR-JFK-SEA-JFK-LHR
* on BA.com it was going to book JFK-SEA into I and SEA-JFK into F (not A) for some random reason (fewer TPs). Flight BA5704 is a codeshare for AA269.
* same dates on AA.com, same JFK-SEA-JFK flights, "correct" booking class = more TPs.

Thanks, shorthauldad - I knew it was all sounding too simple! If you speak to BA on the phone are they able to book you into the correct A class? If so is there any benefit in doing this over just booking on AA.com? So are we wanting TATL flights to be booked on BA numbers/codeshares but domestic US on AA numbers to maximise TPs?

Yes, if BA book you on the AA metal for US Domestics using the AA code they can get you in A class.

Booking via AA.com books you in the AA codeshares on BA metal, though, doesn't it? This loses Avios according to this post by Prospero:

That's basically it. Apparently neither BA.com nor AA.com will do this by default!

You get more Avios if you have a BA Amex card.

28/02 LAX - HNL
02/03 HNL - LAX
03/03 LAX - JFK
04/03 JFK - BRU

What's most interesting is that on some of the itineraries (like the one below), the JFK-LAX leg is flown on QF metal. I had no idea that QF did revenue flights within the US.
I don't think QF has local traffic rights between LAX and JFK, so you might not be able to book it.
