big cancellation fee!

Need advice from the veteran BA flyers. I booked a flexible CW ticket. I need to shift the dates. I apparently misread the terms. I thought it said $500 change fee + difference in price to change or cancel. I'm told it is $2500 EACH WAY to make any changes. The change fee for 1 way is more than the entire ticket! It looks like my only option is to no show & lose the money.

Any advice? I' m Silver but at the rate I'm flying will be Gold in 3 months if that means anything.

It sounds like the ticket was not flexible. I don't think I have come across such a big change fee. Or, is there a possibility that 2.5k each way fees include the fare difference? If the dates to which you are trying to change the flights happen to have very high fares it would explain things.

Well it would be possible to write quite a thick book on all BA fare conditions, so unless we know your exact fare code and dates we would probably unable to be too specific on the advice. However if you do actually cancel, as oppose to no-show, you may get some tax/fees money back.

As an associated question, have an I code fare return to Singapore for Feb, return March Father in law is now quite unwell. Something tells me this is going to have to be a £5k insurance claim for the two of us if we have to pull this trip, am I right. Also have 3 related Avios flights between Sin and Oz and a r/t in Oz

In my experience it's only the outbound part that is restricted and subject to "difference in fare". A fully flex ticket should already be in the highest fare class. Changing the outbound is a reissue of the ticket.

Inbound (once outbound is traveled) is from what I understand and experienced, never subject to "difference in fare". You just need seats available in the cabin and pay a change fee of £150. The ticket is not reissued. You can even change departure airport as long as it's in the same BA region. I have changed LAX for JFK, CPT for LUN.

I can of course be totally wrong but this is how I have experienced it from many years of travel with BA.

Edit: I just hit 3000 posts

Again it depends on the fare basis code. IABCDE9 or something like that. Avios redemptions are refundable, though there may be a fee. Sorry to hear of your trouble, but it is good that you have insurance cover. The usual advice is to contact the insurers sooner rather than later.

It's a CW ticket that said I could change or cancel. I guess it's not fully flexible. when i went to change, i was told the fee. The change fee really is $2500 + fare difference each way. I've never seen such high fees either! I've seen $500 + fare difference. I actually thought the $2500 fee was a typo.

Canceling the ticket also incurs the $2500 fee! The tickets were $2400!

It really looks like I have to eat the cost & just no show.

On a related topic, would a cancel for any reason insurance policy cover the outrageous change fee since I technically would not be losing the value of the ticket by changing dates?

Even the cheapest tickets can be changed or cancelled (at a cost ) so that's no surprise.

Maybe the OP can post some more details?

OP has purchased a return CW ticket for $2400, from where to where?

Is the change regarding the outbound sector?

OP - Please provide the exact fare basis (all letters & digits) and then pull up and cut & paste the exact fare conditions for changes & cancellations. Also, please provide us the breakdown between change fee(s) and fares. We really need all of this information in order to help you. Otherwise you are simply venting and nothing you get here will help you.

$2500 e/w isn't a change fee, it's a new ticket. Perhaps you asked how much it would cost to move your flights rather than what the change fee was?

I don't think anyone's told you how to get the full fare code, and unfortunately I don't know how. I believe KVS or ExpertFlyer can see it, but checkmytrip doesn't seem to display it, and all you get from ba.com is "W/Y/M" etc

If you were to divulge the route, the date, and the price paid, someone may be able to work it backwards.

Not all tickets can be cancelled at a cost ( unless you mean that they can be cancelled with no refund of fare )
