Connecting AA (intl) to BA in Miami

I'm arriving off AA from Central America and connecting in MIA to LHR... Separate tickets.

Can I check luggage all the way through or do I need to clear customs and re-check?

All slightly ambiguous....

Thanks!!

AA no longer check bags through MIA, even if on a single AA PNR. Had this confirmed earlier this week.

US doesn't do transit. You'll have to do the full immigration thing, collect your luggage, clear customs, go landside, change terminals and then check your bags again.

It does. If you're doing international transit through Dallas or Miami and your connection is within 8 hours you can check bags to final destination.

I don't think this thread changes this.

Seriously, isn't this an AA question? I'd ask a moderator to move the thread over to that forum.

But you still have to reclaim them for customs, don't you?

At least I had to - both ways - when I went through Miami to Panama earlier this year. And I asked just about everyone I could find to check it was really necessary.

No, you don't. Not many agents know about this but is possible. Big orange ITI Tag ("DO NOT RESTRAIN") must be used.

Wow. Well I'll certainly agree that not many agents know about it. I must have asked more than 10.

I will!

So that means you don't see your bag at all?

But you still personally have to go landside and back to airside don't you? Or is there way to avoid immigration and just stay in transit airside?

No, you don't. You see your bag in your final destination.

I have never been at MIA nor DFW so can't speak for that but I would think you follow signs for Connections immediately after you leave aircraft.

There are no signs for connections. And everyone you stop and ask - be it airline or US border staff - tells you that you have to clear immigration fully even though you are clutching the onward BP.

That is unfortunately necessary. All US airports (that I can think of) effectively the same way in that respect, no such thing as international transit.

I wonder how ITI is pronounced? I Tee I? or Ittee? (That's a new one on me too, though I did know that Miami is unusual in the US, in that it allows baggage transit - due, I believe, to its unique role to the Carribbean nations).

Quote from Miami's airport website:

"International arriving passengers must claim their luggage before clearing U.S. Customs. Some airlines check bags directly from international city of origin to international final destinations (ITI). Please contact your airline for more information about ITI bags."

Label is a huge orange one with black print:

I.T.I. TRANSIT - DO NOT RESTRAIN WITHIN U.S.
