Is this illegal?

I recently flew a European carrier (not BA) out of LHR.

The flight was quite full, so much so that the overhead lockers could not accommodate all passengers' bags.

So cabin crew asked pax to put their bags under the seat in front of them.

Not hand bags, but full sized hand luggage that when put in the space mentioned, left zero leg room.

Is this something BA would permit? For some reason I think BA would have required cabin crew to store these bags in the hold instead, am I correct?

There is nothing to stop you putting it in the seat in front in either case if it fits so I don't see why this would be a problem. Maybe it would discourage taking such large bags into the cabin if people had to sacrifice some legroom as a result!

As long as the exit rows were clear I wouldn't imagine this to be a problem, but I am no expert so do not call me on this one.

Of course it's not illegal. Uncomfortable, yes, but if it fits under the seat it's not in the way in the event of an evacuation. That's what counts. Room for your feet under the seat in front is simply not a safety requirement.

This is the main reason IMO that priority boarding is such a perk if you are in Y. That gives you first crack at the overhead bins and better chance of not having to put anything in front of your feet.

I experienced this on Lufthansa flights many times. Don't see what can be illegal about it.

I've had it on BA more than once, each time on a full Brussels flight.

When seemingly everyone has the maximum size possible carry on bags it's kinda inevitable.

Not sure about 'illegal' but I was asked a couple of times to move my laptop bag from underneath my knees (i.e.: on its bottom edge against my seat) to underneath the seat in front.

The second time this happened the CC did explained that the floor area, which wasn't an exit row, needed to be clear to help my evacuation without causing one to trip, which in an emergency you might consider that one could. Now I do it as habit.

On UK domestic flights, I have offered to put other people's bags under the seat in front of me.

This is probably because to adopt the proper "brace" position your feet need to be tucked under your seat behind your knees to stop your legs swinging forward and smashing your shins to smithereens on the back of the seat in front.

Coming back from Faro a week or two ago on a BA Sunday evening flight, it was full of golfers who used their one bag allowance for their golf clubs and then brought everything else onto the plane as hand-baggage.

The crew had to ask people to take hand bags, small bags and coats out of the overhead lockers and put them under their seats.

Bl00dy golfers.

I had to put my hand luggage under everybody's seats when transferring in AKL from a 747 onto a Beech 1900D.

Luckily Kiwis are very accommodating .

So that's a no then.

Mods please close thread to avoid reigniting the "people are so inconsiderate with the lockers" v "I have a right to stow my bag" war!

Just wondering why the OP would think this could be illegal.

I don't think I've travelled on any carrier that didn't ask you to stow luggage either in the overhead compartment or under the seat in front of you.

I wonder if the OP means wheelie bags....I've never had to put mine under the seat in front, but I can imagine that it would be too long to fully go under the seat (it is correct size for hand baggage). Maybe this is what the OP means...bags sticking out from the seat in front, therefore creating a trip hazard??

Was the OP saying that the luggage was too large to fit completely under the seat so encroaching into the actual seat space? If so I suspect it may be illegal because that could cause an obstruction during an emergency evacuation.
