There needs to be reward availability for the dates required for your proposal to work though. Reward availability has really dried up over the last few months.

I appreciate that, but let's say for arguments sake that there was availability, like in my example.
You'd me mad not to pay the extra £300 wouldn't you?

Well yeah, apart from those.
I myself, and Mrs S, signed up to the BMI card and now have 24,250(ish) miles each for spending £250 on our respective cards.
Also, looking at the Iberia site, you can actually buy those 20,000 points for £312 - is there any problems in doing that then transferring them to your BAEC account?
Apart from the availability issue if you're not bothered about earning Avios or tier points then yes it does make sense. There are many more examples like that where buying Avios will save you money.
Some US based airlines really go OTT with this way of getting tickets on the cheap when they hold 50-100% bonus mile buying offers.

OK I have one more question then - on ba.com it's clearly obvious about how many Avios you get for flights etc. What I can't seem to find is the info on Tier points.
If you'd be so kind as to direct me somewhere?

Also there have been a few attempts to compare the cash + avios versus a straight cash or avios booking, you could have a look around. Here is one: Avios + money pricing discrepancies

If the reward availability is there then it can be a great deal. E.g sale prices to JFK can low as £1200-1500 in CW sometimes and the addtional cost to upgrade with Avios to F is nothing compared to normal F prices or even sale F prices. Leisure routes are much more difficult to find availability on though...
Probably my best deal so far (admittedly exceptional and not the norm) has been Seoul for £777 and 30k to upgrade one leg to F (this is a flight going for £5k+ in First at the moment)- clearly there is the argument that the Avios are only worth what you would be willing to pay cash in the first place but if you are able to pay for wt+ or Sale CW fares like myself it can turn out pretty good
