There should be an Upgrade Only award bucket?

I was just thinking that with BA having to do an occasional op-up due to overbooking in CW/WT+/WT, there should be "for upgrade only" award bucket so that they can reduce the need for an op-up.

I can understand that if the aircraft is very full it would not be a good idea to offer an award seat for new bookings, but if they are offering some seats for upgrade only, the overall number of occupants of the flight can remain the same and save them op-upping as many, while giving BA more chance to get rid of some more Avios liability.

Hmmm! I don't want BA to reduce the need for an op-up, thanks very much. My success rate, especially on LHR-BOM-LHR, has been pretty good lately both as Gold and now Silver.

+1!

I get op-up'd more than 50% of the times I fly long haul ! I don't want to reduce that percentage thanks

Having never been Op-Up'd (not once!) I think your idea is great.

However, once that starts I may change my mind!

I've been op-upped enough times and I think my idea is great
I don't like the lottery.

Would you have to pay any extra taxes/charges to upgrade using Avios? That might make it harder for them to administrate so close to departure.

You do, depending on the class change. I think CW to F might have no extra charges.

It should not be any harder to administer than the paid airport upgrades in any case.

I think it's a good idea but I think they might need to change a few things. Like having to go through your own service centre when using Avios.

That would be nice I think.

I have done LHR-DXB a few times, MFU'd to CW from WTP, however I have never been able to purchase an airport upgrade to F, even though the flight left with empty F seats.

I expect this new bucket wouldn't be available to people who had already upgraded though

I've been thinking along the same lines. However, it would introduce a new layer of complexity, which would probably be unwelcome.

Its probably a good idea but would need the ability to use Avios at the airport. When I was a United flyer there were quite a few times I upgraded at the check in desk using miles, its a bit annoying you can't do the same with BA.

But United had this two tier structure anyway. Upgrades were a LOT easier to come by than full miles redemptions, so let's hope BA don't copy that idea!

There were a lot of negatives to the system certainly, for one it meant I kept burning my miles for upgrades to business. I don't do the same on BA because quite frankly WT+ isn't worth it. If they allowed double upgrades however....

I was a big advocate to be honest - we used to buy the more expensive economy fares (B class I think) then upgrade to the US for 15k miles, maybe?

We did that a few times, helped along by the fact you earned miles on the Y class fare, my wife's UA credit card, plus the fact we used to credit EK flights there as well. I think we also had luck on our side a few times , but Mileage Plus just seemed to be the gift that kept on giving.

I wish I had the receipts to do the sums with, but we flew to N. America & back with UA 4 times. We paid full price in economy for two trips, got about 50% off one with some VDB comp and pretty much got the other one for free with VDB comp.

Of the 8 TATL sectors, we did 2 in Y (both daytime). We did a further 4 in J (2 op ups, 2 mileage upgrades) and the last two we ended up in F, having been upgraded from our upgrade with miles seats in J.

I suspect the hefty YQ we have on awards now makes this a less crucial point for BA - back in the day, we were still giving UA a slug of cash and probably just taking what would have been a comp upgrade for a 1P anyway, or a straight miles redemption with no cash element.
