Several years ago I paid for a month's access to search out seat availability on aircraft flights. After several computer changes and ... I cannot remember the name, nor URL, of that paid-for service.
Occasionally I read mention of it in FT, so it must be relatively common knowledge.
Info please. As my flights near, I will soon start asking for upgrade possibilities using my Avios...
Yes, thanks for confirming my suspicions. In any case open CW seats provides incentive to call BA and ask to use Avios miles to upgrade from WT+

Correct, since the BA award/upgrade inventory is freely available, there are free tools that will get you that information. Awardnexus.com as well as http://www.awardtravelr.com
No harm in trying if empty seats are available as in not sold -is there?
I don't know if there's any correlation between seat availability and upgrade availability. However, as other people have pointed out, kvstool can scrape BA's web site, as can awardnexus and awardtravelr, and I have some perl scripts to do the same too.

Awardnexus works but they are only free for a limited number of searches which get used up quite fast.
I just tried awardtravelr.com and it is totally useless. I tried a range of searches from North America (various airports) to LHR on 07-10-2013 where BA.com shows availability and awardtravelr shows none.

Just to clarify..
When you say 'BA.com shows availability', do you mean you tried a dummy booking on BA.com or that you used the BA reward availability checking tool? The latter was known to be a little flaky. If you used the former then I'd agree with your conclusions. If you used the latter it may be BA.com's reward checker that's not right and not awardtravelr.
