Tesco M/C v BA Premium Amex

When shopping at Tesco or getting fuel at same, I use my Tesco M/C for the points and BA PA for the miles, but wonder f this is the most efficient use, in maximising AVIOS? Ha anyone done these calculations to see which way's best?

This is the wording:

"Collect Clubcard points every time you spend

Get one extra point for every £4 spent on your Clubcard Credit Card. Plus, your credit card doubles as your Clubcard so you'll get1:
•5 points for every £4 spent in Tesco stores.
•5 points for every £4 spent on Tesco fuel (excludes Esso Fuel). That's more than twice the amount you get with a standard Clubcard!
•1 point for every £4 spent elsewhere."

However, as we know, this is a bit of a misreprentation because 4 of those 5 points are your standard CC points.

So ...

(Deleted rest of this as wrong! See below.)

So ...

£10 on fuel on the BAPP and flashing the Tesco MC to act as a Clubcard gets you (15 for Amex plus 10 for CC) 25 Avios

£10 on fuel charged wholly to the Tesco MC gets you (10 for the fuel plus 2 for the card spend) 12 Avios

Even more efficient would be using an Amex Gold, since technically (in year 1) you get 2 points per £1 for petrol spend, so 2 Avios per £1. In reality, you seem to get 3 Avios per £1 because you get the supermarket bonus and the petrol bonus! That would earn you (30 from the credit card, 10 from the clubcard) 40 Avios per £10.
Wonderful. Thank you.

Isn't an Clubcard point worth 2.4 Avios (£2.50=600) ?

£10 fuel with Tesco MC as CC & AMEX Gold:

24 Avios (10 CC x2.4) + 30 Avios (10 + 2x10 bonus MR) = 54 Avios

£10 fuel with Tesco MC as CC & BAPP:

24 Avios (10 CC x2.4) + 15 Avios (BAPP) = 39 Avios

Botham it also depends on the vintage of your Tescm MasterCard. If it is an older one, I am unsure how far back it changed (at least 4+ years), but Raffles will know better than me, you can receive one clubcard per £2 spend rather than the current one per £4.

I may have found another 500 point bonus code - XX7NFX - which I have just used for a further order of wine, with free timed delivery slot for orders over £50. Last week I used the code previously given on this site, which wouldn't work for a repeat order, hence my use of the above.

Don't think this is right for fuel as you only get 1 point per 2 pounds spend when using a normal credit card and 5 points per 4 pound spend using a tesco MC. So if using any other CC you would only get 5CC points for £10 spend not 10CC.

So TESCO MC = 10CC points = 24Avios (plus more when bonus conversions are on) - would be better if you spent a multiple of £4

BAPP + CC = 15 Avios + 5CC points = 27 Avios
etc

Amex gold still the winner with the year 1 bonus though

Oxmatt - you are right and I am wrong.

Flippin' silly system, though!

So,what I meant to say was:

£12 on fuel on the BAPP and flashing the Tesco MC to act as a Clubcard gets you (18 for Amex plus 6 CC points worth 14 Avios) 32 Avios

£12 on fuel charged wholly to the Tesco MC gets you (combined rate of 5 CC per £4) 15 points so 36 Avios

Is that right?!

Thank you all for your help. It matters not how we get there, so long as we do.

I get confused when trying to compare Clubcard points and Avios in the same sentence.

I use my black Tesco MC as a Clubcard when buying fuel - 1 point per £ - and another card for payment, generating the maximum personal return. Until now the other card was an AmEx BAPP. Next time I will use the AmEx Gold card for payment.

There was an extensive discussion in another thread when a respected FTer suggested that for those with a grandfathered Tesco Clubcard account, the optimum was to use the Tesco MC for both points and payment. My brain is too addled to work that out at the moment.

On the contrary, it matters all-too-much how we get there - hence the eternal scramble for ever more Avios!

Especially the fact that which card is better is dependent on whether you buy a multiple of £4!

Thanks for the welcome!

I'm pretty new to this but since June I've stashed approximately 90k Avios thanks to the tips from yourself and others on this site. All for doing little more than spending what I'd usually spend and claiming bonuses, entering Accor competitions etc. Keep up the good work!
