One ways - any disadvantages?

I'm booking a redemption for the summer, and the flights outbound were selling out very fast - indeed there was only one day with enough seats and then a week's break! The trouble is, I don't have enough miles for both (I'm waiting for some Tesco Clubcard points and some Starwood points to transfer over into Avios to top up so that I have enough). So, I've done what seemed to be the sensible thing - I booked the outbound, hoping that the return flights will remain available for a few more days while the avios transfer over.

Of course, when I finally get my avios, I'll book the return (assuming it's still available - fingers crossed!). But then I will be left with a simple return journey on two separate PNRs. Is there any disadvantage to this? Can I and should I ask BA to link it all up together as one return flight? Or somehow link the PNRs? Or does it just not matter?

Also, does anyone know how long Starwood points and Clubcard points take to actually transfer? Was done today, but I'd like to know when I might have a chance of booking!

Cheers,

-simon

The only advantage of a return flight on one PNR is the price. Otherwise, two one way flights are desirable. If you miss the first flight, on most paid tickets the return flight will be cancelled without a refund.

Good luck in securing the return flight!

Watch out for asymmetric fuel surcharges. e.g. J in December

LHR-JFK-LHR - GBP 319.00
LHR-JFK - GBP 159.50
JFK-LHR - GBP 261.00 (USD414)

The advantage of two one ways redemption tickets is that you can change your return flights after you have flown the outbound. Any asymmetric fuel surcharges is a small price to pay for this flexibility.

The main issue with two one ways redemptions tickets is that you cannot maximise a 2-4-1 voucher. This is not an issue in your case.

In my experience it takes about 48 hours max to show in your EC account, as long as you have previously made a transfer and the accounts are already linked.

so many people are still unaware that this policy has been changed for well over 18months now.
Changes can now be done to any sector-even if outbound has been flown on a return booking- as long as it is made up to 24hrs before the sector (subject to a small charge, any difference in taxes and of course there being redemption availability on the the flight you want to change to).

Double cancellation fees, if not Gold

I used to book my BMI redemptions as 2 one-ways (since they didn't let you change the return after the outbound was flown, unlike BA) but I gave up, because the £25 per person cancellation fees were effectively doubled if we had to cancel or move the trip. This outweighed the extra flexibility of booking 2 one-ways.

The REAL question is whether ba.com and the BA CS agents are aware of the change !!

I still follow the old habit of booking one-ways, Can a change of the return after flying the outbound be made online ? I had a fully flex revenue ticket which would not let me do that last week.

Thanks everyone! And especially for this :-). Unfortunately I don't think the BA account was linked to the tesco account yet. We always used to do tesco->airmiles (my wife owns the tesco account and we had a family airmiles account), but we split the family account to transfer airmiles avios to BA avios for a redemption a couple of months back, so now it doesn't make sense for her to transfer to airmiles avios. Thus we provided her BAEC number (we have a BA household account too), and I'm hoping it won't take too long...

Some countries' immigration requirements may dictate that you must hold a return ticket to be admitted...

That's interesting. Wouldn't any onward ticket do just as well? What if you are not actually returning?

It is more that immigration want to see an onward flight. They know from the APD if you arrived on a one-way ticket.

Are you looking to get the 25% off price?

I dont think this will work for the inbound since you have to start from UK
