Collective Children/Babies in Premium Cabin thread [originally Sticky Fingers in F..]

Moderator edit:

This thread was originally called "Sticky fingers in F..." but it has been turned into a collective Children in Premium Cabin thread, where members can discuss children and babies in premium cabins to their heart's content.

One condition - you must do it in a civilised manner, or you may be cursed with being seated between screaming human beings and stinky aeroplane loos for the rest of your life!

Any further thread discussing children/babies in premium cabins may be merged to this thread.

Thank you for your cooperation.

So... I'm currently looking at taking advantage of the 25% Avios sale and booking a family trip to Florida next year.

My question is this... What's the general view of the FT community about kids in F?

My daughter will be 3 and a half, and has traveled in premium cabins before, so I'm not worried about her behaviour (she knows better). My issue is with our son, who will be 5 months old.

Is it bad form to bring a baby into F? Should I stick to CW? I'm just thinking about how I'd feel if a baby was playing up in F and I was lumped next to it.

Or should I just think "Eff it, I'm paying for it, I'm entitled to do it."?

No, children should be in the last row of Y closest to the lav for a large number of reasons.

Think eff it I'm entitled to it but be as considerate as possible when on board.

No one likes to be near a baby on a long flight but I think the consensus is that it is inconsiderate parents of small children who tend to be the real problem, not the children themselves.

Also fwiw the best flights my daughter ever had were to and from Vancouver when she was 4 months old, slept like a.... erm.... baby both ways. 1-3 y/o were much more stressful flight years.

I think you should totally go for it.

People moan about children in premium cabins and it makes me sick. Babies cannot help crying and the parents are to blame if they mis-behave for bringing up the children badly. Why don't people pick on people their own size? and indeed people who can control their actions more, like some drunked businessman talking too loud?

If you pay for a seat then it is yours regardless of age, I don't see why people need to bully children and I don't like how society sees them as an inconvenience.

Just ensure you keep your children entertained, like a few toys and books along with the IFE.

Go for it!

I done a trip to MIA with my 1 year old in F.
It was a great flight, crew were great and my daughter was fine. Assuming she is normally well behaved and not an ASBO in waiting then dont stress about it....3 and a half is a great age, she will be excited, you will be excited...just enjoy it!

Thanks for the tread links. Interesting reading. The 3rd post on the first page of the "BA First (...) with an infant" actually made me spit out my drink I laughed that hard.

I think I'll go ahead and book it. Can be any worse than the drunken oaf who was sat across from my on my last F flight. Karma and all that.

I'd normally suggest Piriton, but 5 months is probably a little bit too young for that so maybe a slight overdose of Infocol would do the trick.

Babies of that age spend most of their time sleeping don't they?

If you do decide to stick to CW, the upper deck is probably a better choice as there are less people to disturb and there will be easier access to toilets.

Yeah... Others have expressed concerns that she won't appreciate it at that age, but it's not about that. I want to be bloody comfortable! Her reason for going will come when we land and she gets to meet Minnie Mouse. I don't see why I shouldn't book it; certainly I need to use these bloody Avios some how, they're stacking up real fast. That said, I'm just aware that I don't think I'd react too well if anyone made a "huffy comment" when we arrived on board, as reported on other threads.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3G: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 6_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/536.26 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/6.0 Mobile/10A523 Safari/8536.25)

It's public transport, regardless of class and the impact of a normal/noisy/poorly parented [insert your own descriptor] child is the same in every class,

IMO obviously, but I speak as someone who has no skin in the game, so to speak! (I fly F, when I can, but no kids).

Sticky fingers in F...

As others have said. Go for it. You, and your kids, have as much right to a seat in F as anyone else!

Kids are kids, they learn from their parents. I find kids who cause a disturbance do so because they're not cared for properly by their parents. In this case I blame the parents!!!

Book your tickets and I hope you all have a great time

Anyone got a copy of the "question of the month" from the business magazine this month?

Think that will answer your question perfectly (and if you can't get hold of the magazine, the general gist is go for it!! )

I'm just aware that 225k for all 4 of us in F is a bargain, and with my wife on Maternity Leave, we may not get a chance to do anything like this anytime soon.

Wozza, just remember that in F you will not be so close to your 3 year old. When the seat belt sign is on, the nearest that an adult can be to her is through the divider in the E/F seats.

Personally, I think the E/F lower deck bassinet seats in CW are better for a family such as yours. Baby in the bassinet, one adult and 3 year old in the E/F seats and the other adult in the D or G aisle seat facing the 3 year old.

Our oldest son travelled in F when he was 6 yrs old, absolutely fine on the 12hr journey, well behaved. Our middle daughter travelled in J when she was 2yrs old, again she was well behaved. Next month we'll be taking our son who is now 9, middle daughter now 3 and our new born who will be 6 months old in F, there's no guarantee she'll enjoy the pressurised cabin, but we know as a parent we'll do all we can to minimise any impact within the cabin as we wouldn't want others to be disturbed. Majority of time is down to the parents of the child to ensure the kids are well taught and well behave.
