I might have to go to Sydney in Jan for a few weeks with work and am trying to work out a way to get there without having to spend over £4k with BA in CW and without having to fly Emirates for £3k (my boss has this thing about how good they are....) or another non OW carrier.
Obviously the boss isn't gonna let my fly BA when it's £1k more and obviously I'm all about the TPs and points, so it needs to be a OW carrier. I also thought I'd be cunning and start off in AMS or Paris but this doesn't seem to do the trick either.
Can anyone think of any other ways which I might be able to drive down the £4k fare. I was thinking going WTP for part of the route say the first leg of each way but I'm not sure this can be done? I also looked at Cathay and I'm not even going to waste my keystroke because of the ridiculous fare
I also heard that Qatar might be joining OW, has this been confirmed, and if so would this also be a possibility?
Cathay is usually a bit cheaper than BA/QF I've found. There was a sale on recently with Cathay for £3k return LHR-SYD/MEL.
Another option is Finnair, fares from £3k but with 2 stops each way. Cathay £3.5k, QF £3.9k.
British Airways, Qantas, Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines are OW carriers flying to both Sydney and London. Qatar will be joining in the next year or so. You can try searching for seperate tickets but 1-stop options from London only include Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Tokyo and Frankfurt (sort of 1 stop).

Cathay also flies from AMS and CDG. On random dates in January that I checked, CX comes in at £3,500 (from CDG out Jan 9 back Jan 24) but JAL are the cheapest oneworld airline on those dates, again from CDG, at £3,031 (Note, though, that this routing involved a codeshare on an AF operated flight from NRT to CDG which presumably would not yield any TPs, whatever about Avios. but it is possible to select all JL-itineraries, starting from £3,093 on the same dates. For the extra TPs, it's probably worth the extra £60-odd!)

Just beware that, with possible weather/fog/snow disruption to flights in January, it's risky to book travel departing from another country. Short-haul flights are the ones that tend to bear the worst of the delays and cancellations, so if your flight has you departing from CDG or AMS, it may depart on time even though your flight from London does not....and if you're on separate tickets, that could be quite catastrophic (depending on the flexibility of the long-haul ticket you end up with).

You can fly FRA-HKG-SYD rt on CX in business for around 2.9 K most days (it was even cheaper last year, maybe you can bring that down if you play with dates. LHR-FRA shouldn't be more than 100 or so in Y if you book now.

I flew return LHR-HEL-SIN-SYD in October, £2500. I booked this on Finnair website. HEL-SIN was on Finnair, SIN-SYD was on BA CW. Finnair also fly via HK.
I think this was an excellent deal, particularly as I used my own hardearned cash to pay for this. Yes, there is an extra stop in HEL but transiting in Helsinki is really easy. Also, the flight time from HEL to SIN was only 11 hrs (Finnair fly over Russia). The aircraft (340) had the angled bed. While not nearly as comfortable as BA CW I found it ok. I think you have a better chance of getting a fully flat bed on the HK route (330).
