Honeymoon gone wrong, what to do?

Hi all,

Sorry if this should not be posted here, but as the BMI forum is more or less dead not sure where to turn.

Currently on my honeymoon in Thailand (Koh samui) and my wife has been biten by a mistiqo resulting in her now having dengue disease. (We are in hospital as I write this). The docs are saying she should be ok, however we do not know how long she will be here.

Our next redemption is on 7th Dec from BKK to HAN. We are meant to spend 8 days there before flying to SIN where we meet our other redemption to MEL. All sectors are in business.

As a result of this incident the wife wants to get out of Asia and so I'm now looking at options to Australia. We will be staying with friends were she can relax and get better, something she won't be able to do backpacking around Thailand. I guess at this stage I can only really cancel the existing 2 redemptions and just book a new one way to either MEL or ADL. I've checked this from BKK and its coming up at 120,000 miles for 1 person. What is the best thing to do here? Should I buy a low cost to Hong Kong and do a redemption from there? Should we get a flight to SIN and go from there?

Any advice would be great as I'm new to one world and BA redemptions.

Thanks in advanced.

Firstly, I hope your wife gets better soon, what a horrible thing to happen on honeymoon.

If it was me I'd get a flight to Singapore, which isn't that far, and get a nice hotel where at least your wife can relax and recuperate. Then try and move the date of your SIN-MEL redemption which might be easier than cancelling and getting a new redemption from HKG.

Oneworld redemptions are based on the routing and the length/cost of each leg. So the simpler the better.

Not sure where 120k comes from.

SIN-SYD-MEL is available in the next few days for 49k each. Direct would be less but doesn't seem to be available.

Can't see anything from BKK. Can your insurance help ... suppose they'd be defaulting to bringing you home.

Thanks for coming back so quick guys.

Can't change flight from SIN to MEL as its through BMI on SQ. I won't even try to call SQ cause I already know the answer.

Yes, going to Singapore and spending a few days there is a good idea, just wish Hilton wasn't £190 a night.

The SIN-SYD-MEL, is that 50,000 econ per person? Not that it matters under these circumstances, but how is Qantas's econ/business?

No it's 49k in business.

+ £170 taxes

Can search/book it online. Login, then use the search on your BAEC homepage, selecting "pay with avios". Choose "Partners" when it tells you BA doesn't fly to MEL.

Not really too bothered about the taxes, would rather have comfort if that makes sense.

Just checked from Hong Kong and that's also 50,000 miles for business. It's showing a A330 on routes to SYD, MEL and ADL. Which airline is better out of Qantas and Cathy?

What a .... situation this is

I hope that your wife gets better soon SgtRyan.

However since I am an optimist I will say that it is better to get the rocky bits over very early in the marriage so that the rest of it is only good times.

First of all: commiserations! Dengue fever can be a real b!tch. I hope your wife does not suffer too badly. I can fully imagine she want to be with friends instead of even the comfiest of hotels in SIN. I doubt very much she will care about the cabin she flies in, as long as she is somewhere where she feels safe asap.

How about travel insurance ? Do you have any ? Can they be the answer you're looking for ?

Dengue is miserable, but if your wife is on a recovery trajectory, she should feel reasonably well in a few weeks.

How about getting a ride home courtesy of travel insurance, let her recover for a few weeks and then fly back to BKK beginning of december (either cash or redemption booking) to pick up your travels again from there?

May not be appealing to you but worth a thought at least!

Best wishes

In the circumstances I wouldn't be bothered about the difference between CX and QF. I've only flown QF, and then only in W and on the A380, but it was fine.

You should, however, be ashamed of mentioning the "economy" word in this forum

Your 120,000 miles sounds like a one-way business class BKK-LHR-SYD redemption. I think you've sussed it now, but you need to select "include partners" on the booking screen.

Sorry to hear about your wife!
I'd like to urge you to discuss the possible quarantine surveillance your wife will be placed under should you go to Australia shortly. I believe Dengue is on the presribed disease list and if that is indeed the case the passenger will be subject to quarantine surveillance which may place your wife under various restrictions. I may be wring about this but it is better if you find out now rather than later.

I recommend contacting the Australian High Commission to discuss the situation.

I think you need to go home. Apart from LTN Phobia's good advice, which may apply to other countries, your medical insurance may not cover you if travel anywhere from Thailand other than back to the UK. I realise it's not what you want on your honeymoon, but health is very important, and once your wife is better, you can do as much travelling as you want. Good luck!

Strongly advise you to call your travel insurance people immediately, rather than relying on anything here. The details really do matter. Also, you need to deal with the quarrantine issue in OZ as well before you set foot there.

I would get all those ducks in a row and then select the best option for the situation.
