Sorry if this is a noob question, but have been doing quite a bit of flight booking recently that will take me to bronze in a few weeks with a shout at silver if I go MFU instead of all out Avios redemptions.
However, I don't understand the prices quoted for MFU.
Here is an example. LHR-BUD 10/5/13 back on 13/5/13.
Cost of 2 returns in economy £355.40 (on last service of day both ways).
Cost of 2 returns in Club Europe on same service £1015.40
Cost of MFU on same service £1277 + 30k Avios.
Am I doing something wrong?
I would expect to pay 30k Avios plus the economy fare for 2 people?
If someone can check this and point out my error then I would be very grateful.
You can only upgrade Y,B,H fare classes with an MFU - the price difference is because the ET fares shown are the lowest (V, L or some such) but the MFU will be at least an H fare base.

First - log in to your BAEC Account.
On the Exec Club home page, look at the booking options on the left panel.
Where it says "Payment Type" select "Book with cash, upgrade with Avios".
Leave your flight class as "Economy" - it will adjust to CE later in the process.
Ensure you click the tick-boxes for "Upgrade Outbound" AND "Upgrade Inbound"
Hope that helps? dnajockey has already explained the fare rules angle, which will give price differences.

So it's a bit pointless when the actual cash fare in CE is cheaper then?
Can't see me ever pursuing MFU then!
UuA ("MFU") is, to be blunt, completely pointless for most people on s/h (European) routes.
OTOH, it makes a lot of sense if you're going from WTP to CW on l/h routes. In fact, doing just that is where most BA FTers would see getting best value from their Avios.

thanks for the replies.
No, MFU for Europe is not worthwhile unless you are on a flexible ticket anyway.
Straight redemptions are great value in Europe however - Either in CE or if you have status (and therefore lounge access etc) European Economy is probably the best value for your miles you can get.
As others have said MFU is best for when you are in WT+ where the ticket does not need to be flexible and you get almost as many miles as you spend.
Also be aware that if you MFU, you still only receive Tier Points for your originally purchased Cabin, so even if you were able to upgrade a cheapo economy fare in ET, you would only receive the 10 TPs per sector.
Similarly, on a WT-CW, you only recieve the WT Tier Points (and miles)

Which could be summarised as "You get what you pay for".
Use Avios to upgrade - that's not money.
Use Cash to upgrade - yes, you have just bought into the higher class.

It would simplify things if Avios were treated like money. This would involve some devaluation obviously, but would mean that WT+UUA+OUG == WT+POUG+UUA, for example, which seems fairer than stopping at the first point avios are used.

But they're NOT money. They're loyalty points.
Do you REALLY want BA to start putting a cash value on them? I think not.

How do you calculate the cash value anyway? WT+>CW on TATL? ET>CE to FRA? WT>WT+ to SYD?
They have no "cash value" - only what BA Rev Man decides to let you have, on a particular flight, on a specific day, in a certain class … if there's availability, otherwise they're worth nothing at all
