Am i going MAD?

I have to get from SFO to DEN early next month and could take southwest (who i really like) or United direct. Instead I am about to book an instant upgrade on AA via LAX which will take exactly double the amount of time!

This time last year (before i really delved into FT) i would have thought this to be completely crazy (although not as crazy as one poster here over the weekend )

Would others do the same? the TP's and miles are nice but I have already qualified for silver again and wont likely reach gold!

Mad would be doing that trip via MAD for the tier points

Nope, you're fine.

Err ... I had exactly that thought when I saw MAD in caps.

Indeed.

If the OP is only going via LAX and it only takes twice as long, the disease is in its early stages...

I would do silly routings (aka Tier Point runs) to achieve status. You need a plan to aim for Gold after this flight to make it worthwhile. Flying AA without a achieving a TP target would not be my first choice.

And me too, when I saw the thread that's exactly what I believed this to be.

I'm very disappointed it's only such a mundane routing instead.

I'm sure one or two others on this forum would do the same.

Yes didnt even think about Madrid! that would be a little too far for me and probably a little more than the £216 for this routing!

Well gold could just about be in my sights, but I don't think ill have so much travel next year

I have 700TP's + the following for this trip including the sfo-lax den flights (180+60+120+10 = 370)
So that will leave me with just 430TP's needed before June 8th.

also as well as the TP's, this way i will be in first class as opposed to economy in UA or Southwest!

Depends on how much time you have on your hands.
Of course I sometimes take ridiculous routings to maximize mileage or to maximize the amount of time I spend in F class

Don't be overly excited for domestic F though, SFO-LAX is a drink service and LAX-DEN isn't mainline so that'll be a snack basket only.

Direct everytime - based on cost, product offering and time consumed.

To take an indirect routing when there is a cheaper, quicker, better direct routing is just crazy, or you just have to much time on your hands!

With an attitude like that, clearly you should be banned immediately from FT.

Whilst I enjoy flying, and seeing new places, I prefer to spend as much time as I can with friends and family where possible, and taking unnecessary flights really eats into the time I have available with them And anyway, I do enough direct flying to keep BA Silver and Flying Poo Gold each year anyway.

Based on the above, you can banish me from FT once and for all

I'm just back from the States, we took the California Zephyr Amtrak from DEN to SFO. Granted it took the best part of 36 hours, but the scenery was spectacular!

For anything over an hour or so I would rather go in F or J indirect for double the amount of time than take Y direct.

If you are doing 10 TPs flights, such as I am, you would soon change your tune

Yes but a 10TP flight has just become 120!

I bit the bullett, would only have been 2 hours more in the Hilton Garden Inn!

Are you able to stopover in Madrid? Would be a shame to miss the city if you haven't already been!
