BMI Crew on BA

Took MXP - LHR on Friday, both the purser and the captain were enjoying their first week on BA having transferred from BMI. They both showed a great attitude for new new employee even if I am sure the last months had been challenging for them... This was very refreshing after having taken multiple flight in the US where ex CO crew made it very clear that they were CO and not UA crew!

Some of the BMI crew were excited to fly longhaul, I had the pleasure of chatting with a few who were very sweet.

I suppose the difference between the BD/BA and CO/UA crew is that the message is much clearer to ex BMI staff. BA purchased the airline, this was not a merger.

They might be sweet by very naive, why would anyone give up their protected terms and conditions and pay to join MF?

Welcome to FT tjinus. Please keep posting!

I am very pleased to hear about the positive attitude of these crew.

Although no doubt ex-BMI staff were proud of their former airline, for those transferring, the opportunity to join a larger, more diverse, outfit may well be quite liberating and exciting.

All the crew are very nice and all BA crew are being very welcoming to them all. Some have already been flying for four months now but a large number are being trained at the moment. A huge number of training courses for both pilots and cabin crew are going through the Cranebank Training Centre.

For those on the latest bmi pay scales, i.e. crew that had not been working for bmi that long and on a low basic, choosing Mixed Fleet did not make a huge difference to their pay. So as some of these new starters wanted to do longhaul, a small percentage chose the M/F option. Some who were based in regional airports were not offered E/F but allowed to apply for M/F so some of them were interviewed and also joined M/F.

The vast majority of LHR based bmi crew did choose E/F because TUPE protected their terms and conditions including their bmi salary and hourly rate which in most cases was better than M/F.

It is actually quite complicated and each crew member made a choice based on their circumstances and depending on the choice available to them, only LHR based bmi cabin crew were able to TUPE to E/F.

When I did my last flight on the 330 a few weeks ago a few of the crew said they were getting new uniforms the next week as they were moving, and seemed positively happy about it. They were going to a different type of a/c as that one was destined for coke cans and razor blades

It could be because the enjoyed the type of job, or were just happy to have a job. In any event they were positive and that is good for them and for us.

I wish all well in their employment - on whatever terms they have taken.

In exactly the same way people in other jobs sometimes look beyond the money?

Might not be about the money? You know...glass half full and all that...?

True, let’s hope they don't live to regret their decision.

In some cases taking the Mixed Fleet option was about the money though because BA did offer an inducement to give up their terms and conditions. Those who were LHR based bmi crew and chose Mixed Fleet instead of E/F received £10,000.

However as I said it was a personal decision and depended on how long they had been at bmi and what their current salary or rank was. Those that went to M/F had to give up their rank as well as their bmi pay scale so it generally only was attractive to the newer crew or some that did not plan to stay long anyway and could take advantage of the £10,000. Which is paid in two blocks £5000 when you join Mixed Fleet and £5000 after six months.
