BA Fuel Surcharge EX Brazil

Trying to book a first class award GRU-LHR and getting a $300 Fuel Surcharge on the BA booking engine. Something must be wrong. I have never seen a fuel surcharge ever on any of my flights Ex-Brazil. I believe it was not allowed under Brazilian rules. Wonder if this is wrong or BA has found some loophole

AIUI, Brazilian rules do not prevent a fuel surcharge being charged on award tickets, hence the change.

$300 is cheap! I wished mine from SFO was that low.

Really odd since I did three premium awards this year (2012) Brazil to LHR, MAD and CDG on BA, Iberia and AF and none had any YQ and only had less than $50 taxes in charges. So something has changed recently.

Actually, I just priced an award with BA miles and Iberia miles also for next week (flying on Iberia GRU-MAD in business). Again does not show any YQ.

Checked most carriers (BRA-Europe), only BA is charging YQ from Brazil on awards.

No YQ on TAM, AF, KLM, LH, LX, IBERIA, TAP.

Sometimes BA do and sometimes they don't.

At the moment it's a do.

They used to not charge and it was kept a bit of a secret.
Then some blogger discovered it and it spread like wildfire.
About a week later, BA started charging YQ.

I don't know what kind of legal basis they have to do it, but they just do.

Indeed...like it or lump it.

I look on the bright side....it means I don't need to go to GRUesome any more.

They CANNOT. They can be sued by doing that.

The law is Brazil is very clear: Airlines must not charge any fees other than Airport fees on the advertised price of the ticket (cash or miles). This was ruled out by the Brazilian Client's protection Court.

So, just call and "remind" them of that, they will drop it right away! Or you can take them to Court and earn a lot of money....

I hope you're wrong or I shall have to go via GRU again.

I hope the person is right and you have to go again.

This year I have redeemed a lot of programs' miles for award tickets out of GRU, and none charged me a fuel surcharge -- not even BA's BD, despite its history of overcharge-first-ask/avoid-questions-later.

Are you able to link to the text of the law somewhere online - even if it's in Portuguese?
I'd be curious to read it.

That's exactly what I thought. Like I said I have redeemed awards on any number of Airlines ex brazil and never an issue. Not only that. There have been no yq even on round trip flights that begin in brazil. I will call ba on this.
