Old First: Is it out of date?

Okay guys,

Tommorow I am flying F. I have flown first less times than I have fingers on my left hand. However I have tried old and new first. But mainly new. Now I contacted YouFirst and they said the flight is currently displaying old first (but this may change).

So my first question for FT is, how often have people experienced this to change? How reliable is YouFirst?

Secondly, I am coming to terms with the fact it will be old first. What are everyones thoughts on old first in 2012? Does it belong here? Where we have first classes with suites on 777s!

Well, it's hardly at the cutting edge of the latest in technology and passenger comfort, is it?

Perhaps not! But if I was paying a fully-flex $24,000 return to sydney: I would be pretty annoyed if it was OF.

I hope you are not too upset to hear so, but I have only ever flown Old First, in 777s, no less, and I can say that I have always found the experience to be exemplary. The notion that something becomes "outdated" because it has been around for a few years represents a tragic misunderstanding of the essence of quality. Why not board the flight, find out for yourself, then post your opinions here? I am sure you will survive.

The Old 1st was a good product when it was introduced but now is quite a poor product imo; since it was introduced other carriers have come by and passed by leaving the BA product behind. It is not a misunderstanding of essence of quality but quality is a relative term that has no meaning on its own and rather than being high quality compared to other airlines is now imo lower quality than some of the other airlines ( though still better than some)

If someone were paying $24,000 fully flexible return to Sydney, that person could rebook another flight until they get a NF if his/her schedule allows.

Some people here prefer OF to NF though.

Am one of those who prefers OF to NF. That said, both are nice products in their own way.

I won't be disappointed either way though.

Both are nice, far nicer then any other seat on the plane. However, the only knock on OF is that they tend to be under maintained. That being said, it is still nice.

Old First: Is it out of date?

To answer your first question..... Aircraft change only happened to me once. When I rang YFirst on Wednesday(for a departure set for Friday) I was told that the aircraft had been assigned and I asked for the registration of the bird(BNLX I was told).
Got to airport on Thursday for the first leg of my trip (ORD-LHR-JNB) and when check in agent was printing my boarding passes I asked what the aircraft reg for the JNB plane would be and he said CIVE....NF. Aircraft change.
Second question....i was disappointed when I took my outbound flight and discovered it was OF but I wasn't phased much. Service truly remains the same.(also depends on whether the aircraft is in good state.sometime last year the brown part of the chair in front of me,where you put magazines, came off during take off. Crew was very apologetic when she came to sort it out i responded with a "no need, it's not your fault" remark.) Hit and sometimes miss :-(

Last month, my wife and 3 kids (well, 17, 19, and 21 years old) flew sfo to lhr in new first and returned in old first. Each of them preferred old first.

I like BA. Both in OF and NF.

But if I was (crazy enough ) to pay $24,000 for the ticket I would only choose either CX F or the SQ R suites.
For less than half that price I would get QF F on the 380.
And for under a third of the price I would get Bling Air to SYD! Or, shock horror, BA!

I have never paid that! It was an example but fully flexi tickets F for LHR - SYd are in that range!

being the best on the aeroplane is pretty much a given, however , I would say it is more relevent how it performs compared to competitors and I would not rate BA as being one of the top options , though it isn't the worst and much nicer than doing trip in economy

I would be surprised it many people would pay the $20k plus for a fully flexible BA fare when others start at $8.5k . Even EY is only $13k for a no advance purchase fare with no change fees in F albeit with a GBP50 cancellation penalty

I flew LHR-SYD return earlier this month in BA F and I can reassure you that the fully flex tickets cost a lot less than this...

Am doing LHR-MEL next week in fully flex F on QF (as BA just can't compete with the QF A380) and the same fare has been paid.

I for one prefer OF.

NF in the 747 just feels too cramped. It's much better on the 777 for that reason and I'm sure it will be superb with the extra space available on the A380.

My preference is now NF. I didn't mind either way until a few trips back when the OF hard product just didn't stack up - too many problems with the seat, cabin, IFE etc. This was replicated on two further flights.

I do not like the J configuration on the B777s and so I always try to use Avios (or GUF2s) to travel First on the B777 services. On the B744s the J cabin is great and so I generally do not bother to upgrade.

So for me, because of the oft malfunctioning cabin, now NF is my preference.

As for last minute aircraft changes, flying to IAD a couple of weeks ago I called You First and was told the aircraft was OF. On arriving in the CCR the gent in front of me was on the flight and he asked - oh good news sir, there's been a change of aircraft and it's now NF. When we boarded there had been a very late change again and we got one of the beasts - the B-ZZZA with 17 F seats and of course OF! I do not like the ZZZs - it just felt more like a dormitory. Still, very good service from the crew.
