Volcanic ash restrictions to European airspace and airports [Master thread]

Just got home from work, and things are starting to get a bit hectic as a large volcanic ash cloud draws down from the North over the UK.

As I left, 80% of Scottish airspace was closed until 2pm on the 15th (and last word was all of Scottish aispace is expected to be closed by 6am), with projections that about 85% of the UK will be affected as the day goes on, all the way down to the south coast of England.

Obviously, if the airspace is closed, nothing can (in effect) fly through it, so there will me quite major delays most of the day.

I am just glad I am not flying anywhere today.

Flying today at 10am from LHR - hope the ash cloud advances slow enough and the skies will be clear .

And you can expect a lot more of those to be cancelled once the airport "wakes up"

Exclamation

Currently sitting in T5 Galleries North - I can confirm that ALL DOMESTIC FLIGHTS FROM LHR ARE CANCELLED TODAY (at least, everything up to lunchtime on the departure boards).

Thankfully, my LHR-AMS-LGW-JER-LGW flights are operating!

back home having travelled into EDI this morning and promptly turned back after being told the airport was closed. At least it's only a 62 mile round trip for me.

My first reaction was - 'here we go again - any hint of trouble and they cut off the regions'. Thankfully (in a way) it is simply because the regions are affected first by the dust cloud cover causing airspace closure.

Indeed, causes a lot of problems, however better the problems are on the ground than have a number of potential 'all engines failed' scenarios.

Don't underestimate the capacity of this volcano to potentially screw up European and TATLA travel for days or more.
